Israel tries to block GA debate on Gaza, eventually gives up attempt
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Stating legal rules, Israel on Thursday tried to prevent the General Assembly from holding a special emergency session on the situation in the Gaza Strip called for by its President.
As soon as the Assembly President Miguel D'Escoto started to make his opening statement, the Israeli representative, speaking on a point of order, interrupted him.
Basing his argument on rules of procedure, the Israeli representative stated that as long as the Security Council is seized of the matter, and as long as resolution 1860 on Gaza was not vetoed, the Assembly has no right to debate the issue.
D'Escoto sought the UN legal office which said it is up to the Assembly President to decide to proceed or not after the issue is put to a vote.
Knowing that the Assembly would vote in favour of holding the meeting, the Israeli representative then withdrew his objection and the meeting proceeded. (end) sj.tg KUNA 151913 Jan 09NNNN
