Report: Rockets hit Northern Israel

By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

At least three Katyusha rockets, fired from south Lebanon, landed in northern Israel early Thursday morning.

A medical official said several people were lightly wounded. Channel 10 reported that five people were lightly wounded or suffered shock.

The rockets marked the first time Katyushas have landed in Israel since Israel began its offensive against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on December 27.

Residents of the western Galilee on Wednesday reported that three rockets hit their communities, with one falling near Nahariya.

Channel 1 reported that several northern residents have opened their bomb shelters.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday warned that should Israel attack Lebanon, it would suffer an even greater defeat than the one he claimed it suffered in 2006.

3. No, just Hezbollah getting very stupid
They may get the same multilevel strike treatment that Hamas got, ground war optional.

4. It might not be them.
Lebanon is home to a lot of Palestinian refugees. It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to think they got a few rockets.

16. You might find this interesting:
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2009/01/20091855216577820.html

The attacks came after Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah, warned that "all possibilities" were open against Israel as he gave a speech condemning Israel's offensive in Gaza and voicing support for Hamas.

So now what? Is a Lebanese front opening up, or could Hezbollah just be kicking Israel while it's somewhat distracted?

19. Hamas has Grads too
that was part of the "justification" for Gaza and Grads are WWII era unguided missiles

21. How would they get them there? You can't exactly put them in your pocket
Grads = Katyushas = 122mm rockets. They are in current manufacture in several nations. This is not left over ordnance from WWII. Checkout Global Security for some good info on this.

They are rockets not missiles, which means aimed, not guided

23. And these are "new" Grads
more powerful, can travel greater distances, and aim better, causing potentially much greater harm.

The new ones, are 122mm Grads, which are three meters in length. They most likely have been smuggled in pieces into Gaza through tunnels under the Egyptian border during the "ceasefire".

In the past, regular Grad rockets had reached up to 12 miles inside Israel, hitting cities such as Ashkelon. But this "enhanced"longer version has a slightly larger 22kg warhead and can go 25-30 miles.

And no, there is no hiding these under a shirt.

Wonder how the Palestinians had the money to smuggle big expensive rockets, but not food.

:wow:

28. They are all aimed both missiles and rockets
my point was that if Hamas had them then it was quite possible another Palestinian group in Lebanon has them too, which is apparently true

6. And why not, they have already retreated twice from them!
Third's the charm?.. :eyes:

To the original piece, I doubt this is Hizbu'llah as does Israel. At this precise time, anyway. Per almanar (watching on television), there is major activity ramping up at the moment -- schools are being closed and shelters opened in Galilee region, at least 4 shells fired on positions in South Lebanon. There will be a response.

11. Given the control that Hezbollah has...you think refugees stole some serious ordnance
was able to aim it, and launched it. I want to see the story on this one. Occams Razor tells it different

22. Occams Razor
- Hezbollah controls southern Lebanon
- Grads/Katyushas are heavy ordnance. Not something that your average refugee would have access to
- Nasrallah has been doing a lot of saber rattling.

There is more. Unless shown otherwise, the default answer would be Hezbollah supported in some way the action

26. Both Hezbollah and Hamas
with the support of Iran (their funder and supplier of weapons) continues to try to push for a regional war.

They have coaxed Israel to war before, and they continue to.

Does Iran want to be Bombed?

You have to wonder.

because reports last night and this morning state that Hezbollah and Israel both say that this incident was not Hezbollah's doing.

10. Several lightly wounded as Katushas hit Nahariya area

Two people were lightly wounded when terrorists in Lebanon on Thursday morning fired three Katyusha rockets at the area of Nahariya in northern Israel.

It was unclear whether the rockets were fired by Hizbullah or whether the attack was the making of Palestinian organizations in Lebanon acting in solidarity with Hamas.

In the IDF's Northern Command, assessments were that the short salvo on Thursday morning was likely to have been fired by Palestinian terror groups and not by Hizbullah, but it could not be ruled out whether Hizbullah might have told Palestinian groups to fire at Israel as its proxies.

IDF sources said they fired back at the launching sites of the rockets.

...

On Wednesday, Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah stepped up his rhetoric against Israel, warning that the IDF could not destroy Hamas and that Israel would suffer another "defeat" should it attack Lebanon.

In a speech broadcast on Arab media channels, Nasrallah vowed to crush any offensive Israel might launch against Hizbullah.

Israel has warned Hizbullah against igniting a second front, saying it would retaliate massively.
