Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan see anti-Israel rallies
Tens of thousands rally through Arab capitals calling for end to Israeli strikes in Gaza and in support of Hamas. In Beirut Hizbullah leader Nasrallah echoes calls for third intifada, while in Amman masses urge renewal of suicide bombings

"Tens of thousands of Lebanese Shiite protesters, chanting "Death to America, Death to Israel", massed in Beirut on Monday, calling for an end to Israeli strikes on Gaza that have killed 320 Palestinians.

In the Jordanian capital, Amman, about 20,000 people staged a demonstration organized by the mainstream Muslim Brotherhood, while in Cairo about 1,000 people rallied to show solidarity with Gaza Palestinians.

"In Gaza today we face, as a nation, a battle against the fate of Palestine and not the fate of the Hamas government," Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah declared to a throng of demonstrators in Beirut's southern suburbs.

"I join my voice to the voices of other Palestinian leaders that have called for a third intifada (uprising) in Palestine and other intifadas in both the Arab and Islamic worlds...," he said.

"I believe that defending Gaza and the people of Gaza means that the nation should offer the blood of martyrs," Nasrallah said."

1. Lots of demonstrations all over, from Australia to Germany.
Even Viet Nam has chimed in to denounce this path.

2. Arab students at Hebrew U. protest IDF Gaza assault
About 150 Arab and far-left Israeli students protested Monday outside the Hebrew University of Jerusalem against Israel's air assault on Hamas installations in Gaza.

The peaceful if boisterous demonstration, which was held on a brisk December afternoon at the entrance to the university's Mount Scopus campus, was met by a counter-demonstration of equal size by Israeli students, with a large contingent of police separating between the two sides.

The predominantly Arab protesters, some of whom carried Palestinian flags, sang the Palestinian national anthem and carried placards which read "Stop the Holocaust" and "Peace or Pieces?"

"We are protesting because of the awful, inhumane, unimaginable things going on in Gaza, which are against humanity and against international law," said Jeane Aoyda Zbeidy, 19, a second-year law student who defined herself as half-Dutch and half-Palestinian.

3.  World rallies around Palestinians amid Gaza offensive
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Israeli attacks on suspected Hamas strongholds in Gaza have triggered protests in more than a dozen countries.

The attacks entered their third day Monday, with more than 300 people in Gaza reported killed and hundreds more wounded. Israel says the military assault is in response to ongoing rocket strikes on Israel, which have killed two Israelis.

In London, England, dozens of protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy, waving flags and trying to push their way closer to the building, as police tried to hold them back and erect a barricade.

Police in Germany said about 2,000 protesters marched peacefully down Berlin's Kurfuerstendamm Boulevard and dispersed after about three hours.

4. World condemns Israel offensive in Gaza
Muslim nations on Monday condemned Israel over the deadly air attacks on the Gaza Strip, as European diplomats called for an urgent meeting on the crisis which sparked anti-Israeli protests around Europe.

EU foreign ministers will meet in Paris on Tuesday to "look into how the European Union can help ease the current crisis, along with the efforts of the international community, especially the secretary general of the United Nations," a French foreign ministry statement said.

The special UN envoy to the Middle East, Robert Serry, and the head of the UN Relief and Works Agency, Karen Abu Zayd, meanwhile protested strongly to Israel after air strikes hit two UN buildings and killed eight of its people.

---

Protests were also held throughout Europe, from Geneva to Stockholm to Warsaw, Paris and Barcelona.
