Iran captures 'nuclear spy pigeons'
Two alleged "spy pigeons" were apprehended near Iran's nuclear facility at Natanz, according to Iranian media reports.

A report in the Etemad Melli newspaper said security forces found metal bands and invisible string attached to the birds, one of which was found this week, and the other earlier in the month.

The source quoted in the report declined to give further description and did not say what would happen to the birds.

1. Was this one of them?

I know pics aren't allowed, but I couldn't resist. Sorry.

2. It would be a bit more credible had they not already made claims of spy squirrels...
Spy pigeons have been used before (the Brits used them during World War 1). But Im not sure anyone has ever used spy squirrels, although the CIA did try to use kittens to try and spy on the Russians during the Cold War (google Operation Acoustic Kitty).

Pretty good idea when you think about it (the pigeons, I mean). Digital cameras are getting pretty cheap and pretty small these days, and if the pigeon gets caught, well, its just a pigeon. Rather hard to interrogate a pigeon as well, I would imagine.

Pigeons also fly at less than 200 feet most of the time, giving a much more revealing angle than would be achievable from a spy satellite.

Of course, there's no mention of these pigeons having cameras, which makes it more likely that the story is either bull or they're just some old birder's pigeons that took a wrong turn somewhere. Can't imagine that anyone would actually want to put leg bands on a spy pigeon, either.
