Left-wingers arrested for vandalism at Samaria outpost
Police detained four left-wing activists on Wednesday morning they suspect set a fire that destroyed the interior of a stone hut and vandalized a nearby makeshift structure near the Shilo settlement in Samaria.

The vandalized building outside the Adi Ad outpost was home to six young single adults.

The activists - three men and a woman - said they were innocent of all charges and had arrived in the area solely to help Palestinian olive growers.

But according to Tzuri Ami-Or of Adi Ad, scores of Palestinians arrived in the area in the morning and appeared to be heading for a grove that belongs to the outpost. When settlers went out to to protect the trees, they saw smoke rising from the area of the hut on a hilltop they call Givat Hachousha.

2. Police: Leftists in Hebron more dangerous than right-wing counterparts
http://www.ynet.co.il/english/articles/0,7340,L-3556322,00.html

The head of the Israel Police's Hebron district, Commander Avshalom Peled told Ynet that "from my experience in the Hebron and Gush Etzion area, the activity on the part of the militant left can be severe and dangerous."

Hebron police have recorded a drop in disturbances involving Jewish settlers over the past year and noted an improvement in the dialogue between the settler community and police.

"In the past we did not have any problems with the leftist organizations, but all this changed recently," another police official said. "Their activity has become more extreme in nature, and it may result in (an eruption of violence)."

Police claim that on April 25 members of Bnei Avraham and Breaking the Silence took advantage of the fact that they were permitted to tour Hebron to hold an illegal rally and provoke settlers.

"The leftists antagonize the settlers in the hope that the settlers will attack them," a police official said.

"The left-wing organizations have become an even greater threat than the anarchists."

4. The responce from Peace Now and Meretz
from the article

The 'Peace Now' movement issued a call for the immediate suspension of Commander Peled. Movement chairman Yariv Oppenheimer sent a formal request to Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter following the Ynet report

"It would be preferable if the Hebron police focused on laying its hands on Rightist rioters rather than try and bury the shameful situation it is responsible for," the movement said.

MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz) also responded to the report. "It would seem as though the police are working for the Kahanist and fascist groups in Hebron. I call on the internal security minister to conduct an investigation into the conduct of police forces in Hebron," said Gal-On.

3. Settlers Appear To Be Ramping Up Violence in West Bank (Aug 14, 2008)

"Citing testimonies from Palestinians, the volunteer human rights group Yesh Din claims that on July 24, during the evacuation of a bus from the Adi-Ad outpost south of Nablus, near Yitzhar — considered a stronghold of Kahanists and Chabad messianists — settlers attacked farmers in the nearby village of Burin, damaging property and torching crops. Elsewhere during the two-day Adi-Ad protests, the army reported two incidents: one in which a settler seized a soldier’s weapon and fired it in the air, and another in which a settler held a knife to a soldier’s throat. Yitzhar leaders denied both incidents and threatened to sue the army for libel."

Is Adi-Ad a terrorist outpost?

5. Peled seems to have some very hard-line views

Here's a Haaretz editorial from a couple of months ago on the subject of settler violence, with some reference to Peled.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1000239.html

'...Avshalom Peled, the chief of police in Hebron - a center of anti-Palestinian violence - recently expressed the attitude of the Judea and Samaria District Police toward Jewish crime.

This high-ranking officer said that "the settlers are etched in the public consciousness as those who create disturbances, but the majority of the settler public is quiet and only a minority among them disturbs the peace."

By contrast, Peled described the human rights organizations that try to protect the Palestinians as belonging to the "militant left" and said their activities "might be grave and dangerous."

....The law-enforcement agencies, including the prosecution and the courts, must treat Jewish criminal behavior as severely as they do Palestinian crimes.

One cannot expect the Palestinian Authority to deal harshly with those who attack Jews when Jewish violence against Palestinians is tolerated.'
