Gunbattle at Palestinian camp in Lebanon kills two
EIN AL-HILWEH, Lebanon (Reuters) - Two people were killed on Saturday in a gunbattle between members of the Fatah faction and Sunni Islamist militants at a Palestinian refugee camp in south Lebanon, camp officials said.

One man was shot while trying to intervene to halt the clash at Ein al-Hilweh camp between Fatah and Jund al-Sham, a small al Qaeda-inspired Islamist group. The second dead man was a member of the group.

Another Jund al-Sham fighter was seriously wounded in the fighting at the camp, which is near the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon.

Sunni Islamist groups have substantial influence in the camp, which is off limits to Lebanese security forces.

Palestinian Extremist Dies in Lebanon

20/07/2008

Update...

BEIRUT, Lebanon, (AP) - Palestinian security officials say the leader of an extremist Palestinian group has died from wounds sustained in a clash inside a refugee camp in south Lebanon.

Shehadeh Jawhar was military commander of the Jund al-Sham group, which follows the extremist ideology of al-Qaeda.

He was critically wounded in the clash Saturday with members of the mainstream Palestinian Fatah movement. Two other Palestinian militants were killed.

Jawhar died early Sunday from his wounds, said the Palestinian officials after seeing Jawhar at a hospital in the Ein el-Hilweh camp. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press.

Jawhar was a prominent extremist who fought American troops in Iraq. He was wanted by Lebanese authorities for numerous acts of violence.
