Arafat: Stop racial incitement - Hamas says NO
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/A/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1058678429989

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat on Sunday issued a "presidential decree" prohibiting incitement to racial discrimination and violence.

Published in Rammalah, the diktat also bans the establishment of illegal associations practicing incitement and corruption.

It read: "The following acts are considered forbidden in the Palestinian districts: incitement to racial discrimination, encouragement of violence and insulting various religions. Also, the use of violence or inciting to violence in a way that harms the Palestinian Authority's relations with other countries, as well as the agreements signed between the PLO and friendly and foreign parties."

Arafat's decree warned that anyone who does not comply would be severely punished.

In Gaza City, Hamas spokesman Ismail Abu Shanab criticized the new decree and said: "I don't understand the meaning of this decree and we didn't negotiate with the Palestinian Authority about it. We have an understanding with the PA and our people, as well as all those who support our cause, that right to resist is legitimate. The Palestinians are carrying out resistance operations on their lands against an illegal occupation."

Abu Shanab said Hamas was caught by surprise by the publication of the decree. "This announcement doesn't meet the aspirations of our people," he added. "This is merely an attempt to appease the Zionist enemy."

1. Terrorists,
racists... why have so many people gotten it into their heads that Hamas is a peace-loving humanitarian group that resorts to suicide bombings because it must?

3. Lots of people have...
You've never seen the endless articles about why they can't dismantle Hamas because it does humanitarian work and is only fighting to defend itself against the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza?

No, I don't have any specific examples on hand. It shouldn't be too hard to find some though...

5. Of course

I've probably seen more than you have, although I could be wrong.

First, the non-military wing of Hamas does do humanitarian work, but that is no reason not to dismantle it. Second, they are fighting against the Israeli occupation and the State of Israel itself, using vicious terrorism. The fact they're doing the latter doesn't mean they're not also doing the former.

You used the phrase: "why have so many people...." etc etc. This to me implies that you think the view of Hamas as a "peace-loving" organisation is widely held. That is not a widely held view in any sense of the term, certainly not at DU and certainly not anywhere else, beyond the diatribes of fanatics.

You could state that "all the jews think Arabs are scum", with comparable veracity. That would be a strawman (and also outrageous), and so is your original statement.

Unless you can compellingly demonstrate that the view you attribute to "so many people" is actually widely held, of course.

Where is the response? Drdon, myself, Herschel, and one or two others spoke against his statements. I asked if it was sarcasm. Nothing got a response.

9. In which case
I suggest you click "Alert", and it can be investigated. Then once the facts are established, we can debate drawing a conclusion from them.

Until then, the argument that the poster is a racist bigot holds at least equal force as the argument that the poster was being sarcastic. Personally, I think the second is more likely, although I see no way to be sure one way or the other. Certainly there is no way to determine that they are "dead serious" - that is your inference based on nothing whatsoever and therefore irrelevent.

Although Arafat is no angel, he apparently has seen fit to TRY an reverse the ugly hatred, if even through a latent gesture .... He should be commended: which is what this thread tacitly implied: .. Arafat attempting to positively impact the negotiations with Israel, and Hamas refusing to go along ....

BTW: .... since when does ONE errant poster represent the whole of DU ? .....

I mean: CMON ..... ONE guy says something stupid: and EVERYONE is presumed to agree with it ? ...... how absurd is that ? ....

". Lots of people have..." .....

Honestly: .. you would think DU fielded a "HAMAS" Little League team or sumfin ......

AGAIN lets state the obvious: ....

Cold Blooded Murder = BAD ... and BOTH SIDES have blood on their hands ...... ANY group that promotes the indicriminate killing of innocents is AMORAL and should be held to account ....

Out of ALL the palestinian arabs: ... how many have ACTUALLY killed indiscriminately ? ....

Out of ALL the DU posters who try to defend the basic human dignity of the Isreali AND Palestinian people: HOW MANY DEFEND THE CRIMES OF HAMAS ? .....

In BOTH cases .... " Lots of people have..." = sweeping generalization fallacy ....

..........

I see we still adore the Richard Perle rag known as 'The Jerusalem Post' here in FA ......

Perle is a huge player in the Bush/GOP white house ... right ? ....

They are the party we oppose here at Democratic Underground .... right ? .....

Its amazing how influential a right wing, PRO Likud, PRO Bush perspective is around here ....

<edit: grammar>

"Arafat calls upon children to become 'martyrs'"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=124&topic_id=911&mesg_id=911&page=2

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat on Friday called on Palestinian children to follow the example of Fares Odeh, a 13-year-old boy from the Gaza Strip who has been immortalized posthumously by a photograph showing him throwing stones at an IDF tank. Odeh was alleged to have been killed on November 8, 2000 after being shot by IDF soldiers.

......................

YEAH...I can see why you want to give him the benefit
of the doubt.

and dont get me started on the KORINE-A.

who do I believe??
