Israelis push back West Bank wall

BEN LYNFIELD IN JERUSALEM

ISRAEL took its controversial security barrier deep into the heart of the West Bank yesterday. The cabinet approved a major extension to the border wall, aimed at keeping suicide bombers at bay, that will bring tens of thousands of Jewish settlers inside it.

Cabinet backing for a further 26 miles of winding fences and other barriers, passed with overwhelming support, was applauded by Benzi Lieberman, the head of the Jewish settlements council, as "a complete victory".

Unlike previous segments, the entire stretch this time is on West Bank land captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war.

Eleven settlements will be included inside, according to Peace Now, an activists’ group. "This takes the barrier to the middle of the West Bank. The bite is as deep as it can be," says Dror Etkes, who monitors settlement for the organisation.

2. UN asked to block Israeli wall - News24
New York - As Israel decided to extend a security barrier in the West Bank, the Palestinian United Nations observer urged Security Council action to make the Israeli government stop construction and remove the "conquest wall'.

In a letter to US Ambassador John Negroponte, whose country assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council on Wednesday, Palestinian UN observer Nasser al-Kidwa called on the Security Council to "immediately take the necessary measures... to address this grave matter and to bring a halt to these illegal actions by the occupying power.'

The international community should "take urgent action to firmly condemn the construction of this wall and demand its cessation and removal," al-Kidwa said.

5. well
if you believe the lies from the right-wing, the UN is biased against Israel.

Good thing Democrats don't fall into that trap.

6. The make up of the UN ensures anti-Israel bias
How many Arab nations are there? How many nations depend on Arab oil? Now how many nations actually care about Jews in general?

Some balance.

3. Graham condemns Israel's wall
Ottawa and Tel Aviv — Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham joined the Arab League yesterday in condemning an Israeli decision to extend a controversial security barrier deep into the occupied West Bank.

Mr. Graham said the construction of the wall "should not take place" on Palestinian territory because it would destroy remaining hopes for peace. And Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, who appeared with the Foreign Affairs Minister at a joint news conference in Ottawa, said the Israeli announcement will provoke a "violent" Palestinian reaction.

"Those actions are provoking the Palestinians and leading the situation into a path of violence and confrontation rather than the path of peace," he said.
