Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his Palestinian counterpart Abu Mazen are to meet in Jerusalem on Sunday to forge ahead with a US-led peace plan days before both are due to make separate progress reports in Washington.
Palestinian officials have said three weeks into a truce by Palestinian militants they are certain to place the issue of prisoner releases at the top of their agenda with Mr Sharon.
Palestinian Prime Minister Abu Mazen is under strong pressure from militants to achieve results.
They have said they would give him three weeks to secure the release of substantial numbers of prisoners.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper said Mr Sharon is now considering the release of some 400 prisoners, among them 40 to 60 who, though members of Islamic groups sworn to Israel's destruction, did not personally attack Israelis.
