Balfour Declaration of 1917

Not to be confused with the Balfour Declaration of 1926.
The Balfour Declaration of 1917 (dated November 2, 1917) was a formal but classified statement of policy by the British government on the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of the World War I. The letter stated the position, agreed at a British Cabinet meeting on October 31, 1917, that the British government supported Zionist plans for a Jewish "national home" in Palestine, with the condition that nothing should be done which might prejudice the rights of existing communities there.

The "Balfour Declaration" was later incorporated into the Sèvres peace treaty with Turkey and the Mandate for Palestine. The declaration was made in a letter from Arthur James Balfour (Foreign Secretary) to Lord Rothschild (Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild), a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation, a private Zionist organization. The document is kept at the British Library

Wow, this is a record

(oh and some of the posters on both sides that really cannot have a mature discussion... when things got hot in the summer I advocated putting those news in GD, after the flurry of antisemitic and veiled antisemtic posts, as well as anti arab, I get it now)

8. Actually, it is usually written as "oy."
And, why is posting in the I/P so different than posting in GD or any other forum? Non-donating members can post here. People with one post can post here. I really don't see what the big deal is.

9. Since it is still talked about in the Middle East it is very important
They still recall the Ottoman's even if when I was in College more students had never heard of it. I had a teacher from Iran and he could not get over it. Students getting out of college who had not heard of the Ottoman Empire. I had gone to school and taken world history 20 years before these kids so my teacher and I used to have a lot of private talks. One had to know a little of WW1 to know about WW2 I guess the school dept. figured. By the way I lived in Saudi Arabia and every day people still talk of what happened with the Ottomans. Some one who took over their country. I guess other people pushing you around in your own country makes people mad.
