Jerusalem: Islamic leader detained after scuffle (Al Aqsa Mosque)

Jerusalem: Police scuffled yesterday with an Islamic leader of Israel and several of his followers near a holy site in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem where Muslims have been protesting excavation and repairs.

Raed Saleh, the fiery leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, and six supporters were taken for questioning after "a brawl" with police guarding work near Al Aqsa mosque complex, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

It was not clear whether charges would be brought, Rosenfeld said.

Three Palestinian youths were questioned on suspicion of throwing stones at an Israeli bus near the Old City, he added.

Rosenfeld said about 2,000 Israeli police - double the usual number - were on duty in the city to quell any violent protest against Israel's plan to build a new walkway up to the compound. During a visit to the site on Tuesday Saleh called for an Islamic revolt to stop the project.

"The danger in Jerusalem has increased," he said. "It is high time for the uprising of the Islamic people."

Meanwhile, the chief of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference accused Israel yesterday of flouting international law by undertaking works near the Al Aqsa mosque compound.

The works constitute a "flagrant violation of international law which does not allow an occupying state to change the religious and historic landmarks of the territories it occupies," Ekme Al Deen Ihsanoglu said.

Just what we need right now. If they start fighting over the mosque/temple spot, it really is the "end of days".

Israeli forces demolished the entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque after destroying the Moroccan Gate bridge leading to the Muslim holy site. Chief Palestinian Justice Sheikh Taysir Tamimi said that the timing of the destruction in the Old City of East Jerusalem was purposeful as all eyes are on the meeting in Mecca and political leaders are enroute.

The Sheikh told a press conference in Ramallah this afternoon that the Israeli government is continuing with its plan to demolish the historic road at the Moroccan Gate with a major threat to the western side of the Mosque.

Israeli forces expelled all Arab workers and journalists Monday, increased the military presence in the face of nonviolent protests over the past two days, and closed all roads on Tuesday.

Sheikh Tamimi pointed out that today's demolitions began a few years ago when the excavation plan was laid to destroy Al Aqsa Mosque one part at a time and build over its remains. He said that Israel is committed to ethnic cleansing.

The Israeli government is destroying Muslim neighborhoods and historic sites, demolishing Palestinian homes and closing Jerusalem to Palestinians with the Wall. It is also penetrating the Muslim Quarter of the Old City and building a synagogue and putting Jewish settlers in place.

2. I've been watching this build up as some sort of Muslim meme
but is there any evidence that the dig is damaging the mosque or is going to damage the mosque? Its really looking to be like the cartoons and other artifically inflamed things being fanned by the mullahs

7. It's a Jewish meme as well...
When the waqf did some excavation work years ago, Jewish religious leaders were quick to scream about the Muslims trying to destroy the site, blah blah blah...

Personally I think there should be some law enacted that forbids any excavation work near or in holy sites in Jerusalem unless religious leaders from the different religions all agree on the work and are sure that there's no possibility it could cause damage...

8. Why is Raed Saleh described as...
..."the fiery leader? What's up with AP? Did his head catch fire and justify the poe-leece fighting with him? Was he a fire hazard?
Gee, i guess if he's "fiery" then the police had to subdue his hothead-ass. Were the police "fiery", or were they diffuse? Did the police dampen the out-of-control moolah? Sheesh.
And how does a police spokesman go by the name "Mickey"? What's wrong with Michael? Mickey? Does his Muslim counterpart go by the name "Moe"?
