IDF sets up detention center near Gaza

The Israel Defense Force set up a temporary detention center near the border with the Gaza Strip where dozens of Palestinian men arrested by troops operating in the tiny coastal strip are interrogated each day.

The army said soldiers have been instructed to treat the detainees in a humane manner and stressed that most men are released after undergoing interrogation.


Released Palestinians are given a package of food staples like sugar, oil and flour.


"We can be proud of the IDF's treatment of the Palestinians," reservist soldiers operating the center said. "It is a shame that the other side disrespects human life."

Talk about heavy handed propaganda; yeah, I'm sure the Palestinians being rounded up, detained and interrogated, are just pleased as punch with how they're being treated.

1. Dachau started as a detention center.

The U.S. had its detention centers for American citizens of Japanese descent and of German descent to a lesser degree during the Second World War. The Warsaw Ghetto was a detention center. My point is that detention centers are usually punitive rather than useful for segregating a demographic deemed harmful to the general population.

of this detention center to Dachau or Warsaw is more than a little bit distasteful and is an abuse of language of the first order.

6. 300,000 people died in the Warsaw ghetto

and close to 30,000 died at Dachau. Israeli actions, as despicable as they sometimes are, don't come anywhere near that magnitude of violence.

From what are hearing about the seige of Gaza, these staples are enough for any Palestinian to volunteer for interrogation. Sorry about the cynicism.

The occupation is just not really over. But the socalled withdrawal does at least tell us something about what life would be like if Palestinians ever conceded to live in the bantustan model of Palestine under the "limited sovereignty" that Israel has in store for it.
