Report: Israel pressuring U.S. over Iran attack
The Washington Post reports that despite fact U.S. intelligence sources believe that Iran needs another 10 years before having nuclear weapons, Israel believes critical breakthrough will happen within months, and is therefore pressuring the Americans

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3237839,00.html

<snip>

"The U.S. government is continuing to aspire for a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear problem, but doubts for chances of success are growing, a Washington Post article published on Sunday said.

According to the paper, Israeli officials who visited Washington recently gave the Americans an urgent message regarding Iran: The Islamic Republic was closer to developing a nuclear bomb than Washington realizes, and the moment of decision is approaching quickly.

On Saturday, a New Yorker article said that the U.S. government is planning to massively bomb Iran, and even use nuclear bunker-busting bombs in order to destroy Iranian facilities and development sites containing nuclear weapons."

<snip>

"The newspaper said that Israel recently leaked its own attack plans, if the United States does not act. The Israeli plan includes aerial attacks, commando raids, a possibility of a missile attack, and even bombs carried on the backs of dogs. The newspaper quotes Israeli newspapers which said that Israel constructed an exact replica of the Natanz nuclear development facility, but the United States does not believe that the operation can succeed without using nuclear weapons."

1. So do the (illegal) deed yourself, Israel.
And reap what you sow.

2. * wants Israel to drop the first bomb so HE can send our troops in
to PROTECT Israel, which is likely a sweeter pill for the repukes to push than staright up pre-emptive nuke strikes against a sovereign country which has NOT attacked us.

4. As the "Three Mile Island" incident very clearly illustrates
sometimes a switch thrown the wrong way - or a "/" instead of a "\" in the "computer code" can totally disable a nuclear system.

And you can never find it.

5. Would you post the link to the original WP article?
This ynet news article is second-hand. Let's have the original article.

I'm sure Israel along with many other nations have plans on file at all times to attack whom they perceive to be a threat and plans to pressure some other nation to join them in attacking. What we need to know is if that WP article referred to timing of such an attack. The fact that there are plans for it means nothing and is not news.

8. Frankly; I have no problem with the destruction of a facility ....
that could be used by religious extremists to create weapons of mass destruction. I do not trust ANY nation to NOT use, or threaten to use, nuclear weapons .... The BUSH WH is QED ...

I thought the destruction of the Osiris facility in Iraq was wise, and didnt inflict human loss, as far as I know .... As much as I despise what the Bushniks are doing in Iraq, I still strongly believe that Saddam Hussein WAS a Stalinist tyrant who should NEVER have access to nuclear weapons .... The man DID cross an international border and occupy a neighboring state without cause ---

As a secular humanist who respects international law as the basis for world peace, I despise ANY state leader who rolls his military over an internationally recognized boundary without absolute justification ... I do not trust dictators like Hussein with WMD's .... ever .....

That being said : I dont believe Saddam had such weapons, and therefore the cause for war there didnt exist: BUT I still consider the world a safer place because the Osiris facility was crippled ....

Ever read "Report On The Barnhouse Effect" by Kurt Vonnegut ? ... The protagonist uses his extraordinary psychokinetic powers to destroy ANY and ALL weapons; reducing men to fighting with sticks and stones, if they chose to fight .... As soon as Dr. Barnhouse heard of a weapon BAM! it was twisted into a heap .....

I actually wish ALL nuclear weapons facilities were destroyed .... all of them ..... Israel's and Pakistan's as well ....

I think the Neocons are fucking nuts, and those in the world who actually believe that having nuclear weapons is a good thing, or that using such weapons is a good thing, are extremely dangerous ....

Iran would be just as dangerous as anyone could be .... I do NOT sleep better at night knowing that Pakistan, India or Israel possess nuclear weapons .... nor does it improve my sleep to know that Britain, France, Russia, Ukraine, China or the US has these weapons ....

So, if Iran's nuclear facilities were to NOT be subjected to strong international controls recognized by the world community as necessary for the peace and tranquility of the world in general as a reasonable course for the development of nuclear power for electrical generation, then I might favor a quick strike, ALA Osiris, to remove such facilities from service ....

I am a pacifist, and an internationalist, but I cannot say I would complain if the weapons of the world were stolen and destroyed .....

Dr. Barnhouse ? ..... Are you there ?

11. LOL, Thanks probably good advise. I thought that it might be for something
like the historically imflamatory nature of the struggle. I personally don't think we should be annointing a different status to this subject matter however.

12. The WaPo article reports, inter alia
Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 12:19 PM by Coastie for Truth
"Many military officers and specialists, however, view the saber rattling with alarm. A strike at Iran, they warn, would at best just delay its nuclear program by a few years but could inflame international opinion against the United States, particularly in the Muslim world and especially within Iran, while making U.S. troops in Iraq targets for retaliation."
EVEN HIS OWN MILITARY IS TELLING BUSH THIS IS DUMBER THEN DUMB, AND DUMBER THEN IRAQ

but
"Others believe it is more than bluster. "The Bush team is looking at the viability of airstrikes simply because many think airstrikes are the only real option ahead," said Kurt Campbell, a former Pentagon policy official."
YEAH, LIKE IRAQ, NOT ENOUGH RESOURCES TO CARRY OUT A POORLY PLANNED CAMPAIGN, NOT ENOUGH RESOURCES TO SEAL OFF THE BORDERS, NOT ENOUGH RESOURCES TO EVEN ESTABLISH A CONSTABULARY.

and
"The administration is also coming under pressure from Israel, which has warned the Bush team that Iran is closer to developing a nuclear bomb than Washington thinks and that a moment of decision is fast approaching."

<<<snip>>>
"The threat from Iran is, of course, their stated objective to destroy our strong ally, Israel," Bush said. "That's a threat, a serious threat. . . . I'll make it clear again that we will use military might to protect our ally Israel."

TRANSLATION: WE (BUSH'S OIL COMPANY FRIENDS) WANT CASPIAN SEA OIL AND WE WANT OIL FROM THE ASIAN FORMER SOVIET REPUBLICS -- AND WE NEED AN ACCESS ROUTE FOR PIPELINES -- AND WHEN THE WHOLE MILITARY ADVENTURE GOES TO HELL IN A HANDBAG --- WE WANT TO BLAME IT ON AIPAC AND THE ISRAELIS - AND WE WILL "HIRE" (ENDOW) SOME ACADEMICIANS TO WRITE THE PROPER COVER STORY

IF THE PRESIDENT AND HIS ADVISORS WEREN'T SO FRIGGIN ARROGANT AND SO FRIGGIN SELF-ASSURED AND SO FRIGGIN ILL-INFORMED, I WOULDN'T WORRY.

BUT THEY ARE ARROGANT, SELF-ASSURED, AND ILL-INFORMED.

13. Combatants do not release their plans before they attack.
This is propaganda. If a real attack is planned, you won't hear about any specifics until it is over.

14. I agree.
This is, IMO, nothing but "wag the dog" and a very bad "slight of hand" trick. Basically, Iran is being used as a distraction from the REAL war...Iraq (among other things)! However, extremists from BOTH sides are gobbling it up. There is a war with Iran, but it is a war of words, because, let's be honest, it is the ONLY type of war we can wage given our current fiasco.
