Academics' Paper on 'Israel Lobby' Blasted
By JAY LINDSAY, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke calls their work "A Modern American Declaration of Independence!"

It's not the kind of praise Harvard's Stephen Walt and the University of Chicago's John Mearsheimer have welcomed. But a paper they wrote — alleging that pro- Israel special interest groups have manipulated the U.S. to enact policies that favor Israel and work against American interests — has won Duke's admiration while getting pounded by criticism elsewhere.

Since "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" was published as a "working paper" on the John F. Kennedy School of Government Web site late last month, accusations from shoddy scholarship to outright bigotry have been leveled at the academics. Walt is the Kennedy school's academic dean.

"A classical conspiratorial anti-Semitic analysis invoking the canards of Jewish power and Jewish control," was the Anti-Defamation League's assessment.

1. Has AIPAC bought out Associated Press?!
Why do they mention the Klan in their article? This is just ridiculous.

14. The AP is 50-50 FAUX NEWS these days
I think they're participating in Bush's propaganda program. They have signed on to many RW views and contributing to RW articles recently.

Check your sources. Do a search on the writer.

9. Have you read it? It stinks!
I did, and I thought it was a very shoddy hack job. I'm with Dennis Ross (President Clinton's Middle East envoy) on this one: "It is basically a series of assertions. They quote only those people who basically have this point of view and don't take a serious look at anything in a more profound way. It is masquerading as scholarship."

The problem is that it perpetuates the sterotype of the Elders of Zion. That there is some grand scheme by The Jews to control governments of the world.

Or, as Alan M. Dershowitz put it: "...ignorant propaganda."

12. You like what Dennis Ross said about Middle East eh?
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 10:44 PM by AlamoDemoc
Dennis Ross is no longer partial point of view in my my book....he pocketed money from AIPAC...and throughout his meaningless ambassadorship between Israelis and Palestinians, he failed as many did before him....to be an american and be fair was not fair to Israeli, he thought.

Now he's collecting salary from an Israeli think-tank

4. This would be the ADL that accused faculty of the Hebrew University
of anti-Semitism (!)

When vigilance undermines freedom of speech
By Mark Mazower
Published: April 3 2006 20:28 | Last updated: April 3 2006 20:28

(snip)

Vigilance can be carried too far. Having denounced American academics for supposedly making anti-semitic statements, the Anti-Defamation League last year levelled a similar charge at faculty in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There is something peculiarly Kafkaesque about the idea of an American Jewish watchdog monitoring Israel for anti-semitism, yet once the mechanism and mindset exist, this is where the logic of vigilance leads: anti-semitism may be found anywhere. In fact, the intellectual climate in Israel is tougher-minded than in the US and the authorities at the Hebrew University simply took no notice. But brandishing the big stick of anti-semitism against all and sundry helps no one: it lumps together serious critique with crackpot ravings, does a signal disservice to those who really suffered from it in the past and stifles a badly needed debate within the US. There is no reason why the partnership between the US and Israel should not be susceptible to the same kind of cost-benefit analysis as any other area of policy. After all, no special relationship lasts forever: ask the Brits.
