“The Palestinians have punished themselves and realized that it brought itself and us to a dead end,” Khatem Abed el-Kader, former Fatah member of the Palestinian parliament told Ynet on Saturday.


Khatem believes the shock results in Wednesday’s parliamentary election were “more a defeat for Fatah than a victory for Hamas,” adding that the Islamic group will not last long in power if it does not renounce violence.


“If the group does not change it will not be able to manage things and if it changes it will shoot itself in the foot, and it will appear that the Palestinians have no alternative but Fatah,” Khatem said.

1. But wasn't that the story

of Fatah and its lengthy insurrection and Arafat hard line blowing of treaty opportunities? No matter how you compare the two this is pot and kettle. Those waiting in the wings for Arafat and the hardliners to vanish just ran out of time and the people haven't changed much. Desperate people will side with anyone fighting their enemies especially when the only other choice seems to be instinctively lethal submission to collaboration- especially with the Israeli hard right holding fairly open menacing plans against them not for cooperation.

If it goes through their foot into the major enemy they are riled enough to do it. So would anyone, but Hams played their political cards well also.
