Settlers who invaded Hebron market face evacuation
State tells court Jewish settlers who took over Palestinian stores four years ago to be removed by mid February

<snip>

"Jewish settlers from Hebron, who invaded the town's wholesale market, will be evacuated from there by mid February, State officials said at a High Court hearing Thursday.

The Hebron Municipality filed a petition to the High Court of Justice four years ago, a short while after Jewish settlers took over Palestinian stores in the wholesale market located near a Jewish neighborhood.

The Municipality charged that the IDF did not do anything in order to stop the invasion and return the shops to their Palestinian owners.

State officials have already said in the past that the invaders would be evacuated, but added that the evacuation would be implemented after considering the security situation.

During Thursday's court hearing, State officials said that Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz had instructed the IDF to prepare for an operation to evacuate the invaders in mid February."

2. State orders 8 settler families to quit Hebron market homes
<snip>

"The Civil Administration in the West Bank on Tuesday morning issued evacuation orders for eight Jewish families, which had settled in Palestinian-owned shops in the Hebron market.

According to the order, the settlers are requested to leave the houses by January 15, after which they will be forcefully removed.

The distribution of the orders came despite an early leaking of the plan to settlers who informed the media and who are planning to demonstrate against the evacuation.

The eight settler families moved into the Palestinian shops after their owners abandoned them due to the settlers' pressure."

4. Four years to serve the notices...
...now comes the tricky part, the actual evictions.

Hebron settlers get eviction notices

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3194219,00.html

<snip>

"The decision to hand out the eviction notices is in accordance with Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz’s order to clear the settlers from the area.

However, the spokesman for the Jewish settlement in Hebron, Noam Arnon, said in response that the settlers would not comply with the decree."

<snip>

"We believe this act is both immoral and illegal, as we are the legal inheritors of the property of the Jewish community in Hebron” Arnon told Ynet.

“We received all of the rights from the owners. We agreed to a process in which we would lease the homes from the State, in the hope that this would bring a peaceful resolution to the matter; but they are proceeding with a move aimed at expelling Jews from the place. We will not comply with the eviction notices.”

<snip>

"Right-wing activist Itamar Ben-Gvir, who lives in Hebron, said earlier, “They (Civil Administration officials) will not be greeted with flowers here. (Prime Minister Ariel Sharon must understand that the Hebron is an entirely different story than Gush Katif."

Jewish settlers attack Israeli soldiers in Hebron

Published: Tuesday, January 03, 2006

HEBRON, West Bank -- Jewish settlers threw eggs and a chemical substance at Israeli soldiers who distributed eviction notices ordering eight settler families to leave a market area they took over four years ago, Israeli authorities said Tuesday.

The settlers were given two weeks to leave the area. If they refuse to leave, the army will remove them by force, said Lt. Adam Avidan, a spokesman for the army's Civil Administration. "The order ends any chance of them being able to live there legally," Avidan said. "I don't think they will be able to return there in the future."

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a small group of civilians threw eggs at police and soldiers distributing the notices. One policeman was hit by a liquid that caused burning in his eyes. The officer was hospitalized with light wounds.

I wonder to what degree the settlers represent the average Israeli in the minds of the average Palestinian.

its very much a part of the landscape....and knowledge of the culture here. Many palestenains got their first exposure to democracy once within israeli detention centers, as well as their knowledge of hebrew.... (they're claim.....in the 70's, 80s'). They organize classes, get degrees, get religion, etc very well organized.

part of the division between the palestenains is based on the those that spent time in israeli jails vs those from tunisia who are considered outsiders. Those who spent time in the jails figured they "paid the price" and now deserve to play a part in the democracy.....

dont be so shocked......the middle east is not a copy of the west....
