Study: 22% Of Israeli Households Go Hungry
The study, which was leaked to the Israeli press and dominated headlines for two days last week, showed that 22% of Israeli households, more than one in five, suffer from inadequate nutrition because of poverty...

News of the study's findings comes three months after a Cabinet meeting in which Prime Minister Sharon publicly attacked oversees funders which had highlighted Israeli hunger in their fundraising appeals to American donors. At the meeting, he brandished a Joint brochure to illustrate his complaint.

Declaring that Israel had "poverty, but no hunger," Sharon won Cabinet approval June 1 for a resolution calling on Diaspora charities to focus on "Jewish and Zionist education" rather than on Israelis' economic hardship.

Israeli press reports, confirmed by several sources, indicated that aides to the prime minister had intervened last month to delay — or, as some sources claim, undermine — the new study, which some Israeli officials view as harmful to Israel's image."You have a government that is obviously uncomfortable and embarrassed by the hunger, and on the other reality, which the Brookdale study confirms, that poverty and hunger exist," said a source close to both sides.

1. With all the billions ...
we've given them??? What does this say about their military budget? It appears *their* military-industrial complex is also alive and well. We keep going as we are, and our "hungry" percentage will sykrocket here too.

There should be no hungy people in Israel, or Palestine, or for that matter, anywhere else, and it saddens be to learn of it. .....Who would have thought?

2. sharon regime would rather kill Palestinian children than feed Israelis

just as the bush regime would rather kill Iraqi children than feed American ones.

It is just more profitable.

3. Military budget
has been slashed since the Hudna. I guess some folks just don't have a sense of monitary figures and have no idea what it costs to guard 6.5 million citizens and clean up afer hundreds of bombings. this is in addition to standard operating expenses.

7. Does Your 'Everyone', Sir, Include Hamas, et al?

10. Most Of This, Mr. Herschel
Comes from Likud mismanagement of the economy, and attempts to slash government services to the people in the interests of privatization to benefit cronies.

11. Hmm...
What was Eisenhower's quote on this subject?

If Israel concentrated on making peace and not war, this statistic would be lower.

What's the rate of hunger among the Palestinians? 75%?

18. Israel has to make war
when Palestinians make war. Palestine is not a peaceful nation. Israel must mount vigorous defenses against it and take all security precautions necessary to keep them out, including the fence. It is crucial to the security of Israel to do this. Sorry.

14. Israel & Inequality
Israel has greater inequality in wealth and income than any other Middle Eastern country.

This problem affects both Arabs and Jews.

17. You're right
I was thinking of a report I saw a while back. I looked it up...

Israel isn't #1 in Middle East inequality. However, it is #2 in inequality among Western nations.

19. Well
Israel must respond when Palestinians make war. Palestine is not a peaceful nation. Israel must mount vigorous defenses against it and take all security precautions necessary to keep them out, including the fence. It is crucial to the security of Israel to do this. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. Sorry Palestine.
