9. Well
If you are threatened, pick up a phone. If you are not familiar with firearms, you probably shouldnt be looking into it now, what with the heated emotions and all.

I doubt that "freeps" will be confronting you but again, pick up a phone. You want a gun, do it right, take your time, learn what you need to know, and get it for the right reasons.

Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 01:25 PM by DonP
Now you want a gun, huh?

You better get started now.

Depending on what state you live in you may have to wait 6 weeks to 6 months for a state issued Firearm Owners ID card and then up to a ten day waiting period when you find a gun you want.

You may not be able to carry your gun on your person or even in your car without a permit. In some states you can't even have the gun and the ammunition outside of a locked case.

Remember all this the next time Sarah Brady and her Republican buddies at HCI and the MMM ask for your donations.

But go through the hoops beacuse it's worth it. Get a gun and get some lessons on safety and marksmanship.

Oh, welcome to the Liberal Gun owners club.

10. Get some training, the NRA is a good place...
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 02:45 PM by adwam
A good place to learn about gun safety is the NRA. They are sure to have some classes in your area.

Remember, the National Rifle Association is a non-political educational organization. It is the NRA-Institute for Legislative Action which is politically active.

If you take a NRA course, non of your money goes to the ILA.

If you have a gun, it is essential that you have proper training in gun safety.

12. Oh, pleeeeze. Don't be an ass.
Arming yourself is an incredibly stupid idea. You'll shoot your foot off or blow a hole in your tv. Getting a gun is a really stupid thing to do.

14. Silly gurl
Having been a gun owner since the ripe, old age of 10, I have yet to shoot either myself or my TV. It IS possible to own them, handle them, use them without being a menace to yourself and those around you.

If you're thinking of getting a gun to protect yourself against the rampaging freeper hoards, you're wasting your money and, yes, probably introducing an element of risk into your life that you could do without. If, on the other hand, you have a genuine interest then I say welcome to the club. There is plenty of good safety training available and I recommend to anyone considering such a purchase that they avail themselves of it.

16. Nope. I've never been that careless
but anyone who needs to buy a gun TODAY to protect them from the repugnents gathering with pitchforks and torches at the base of their driveway is asking for trouble.

You'd be better off investing in a vacation.

29. Actually, I haven't been busy.
I have managed to get absolutely no work done in the last week. I've been on pins and needles about the election, and have been glued to the internet/news. I have posted to DU quite a bit in the past few days, if that's what you mean. Had a few spirited discussions and am still trying to find my niche. Not sure if it's this forum, though I am considering weighing in.

19. Why the change of attitude?
Crime is on its way down, as it has been from the early 90's. If you are upset about a particular event in your life I would suggest a self imposed waiting period of about 4 years before you buy your gun.
Never go to the supermarket hungry and never buy a gun while you are angry. Think about it for a while.

20. it was just anger...about all the events over the
last 24 hours....i've calmed down a bit now, and realize that buying a gun with my current emotional state is a date with disaster(not like i had any $$$ to buy, anyways)...lol...but i will contemplate and give it more thought in the future. I've just had a VERY hard day (as we all have) and needed some time to cool off

... responsibility and discipline are the key to ownership. I really wish our party wouldn't side with tighter gun-control, we'd have a much bigger base if we didn't use it in our platform.

24. Imagine a world where nobody had any guns
Last time the world was like that was about the year 1340.

The Dark Ages.

Plague.

Feudal system.

Slavery.

Constant wars.

The rich and strong exploited the poor and weak.

People fought with edged or blunt weapons.

No civil police at all; robbery and murder rampant.

No education except for royalty and the clergy.

Great idea, 12ss1kp!

before assaulting freepers in OH, one should consider the legal and safety consequences.

Or could it be internet bravado? Naahh, noone would do that.

31. If you do get a gun...
Defiantly take a safety course. There are many all around the country.

I am a firearms instructor... I teach hundreds of people a year to own and shoot each year. Take it from me, owning a gun is a good feeling and can be done perfectly safely. You will not regret it.

Find training at any of these locations:
http://www.nrahq.org/education/training/find.asp
http://www.marksmans.com /
http://www.gunsite.net /
or my class if you are in the SF area (reply if you want the URL).

1) Learn how to be safe handling it and how to store it safely. Guns can be handled and stored PERFECTLY safely with just a little bit of training and common sense.

2) Save LOTS of money on ammo by being taught the right way to shoot instead of trial and error. (Shooting the right way from the start is easier than having to unlearn bad habits you picked up by trying to teach yourself)

3) Learn what type of gun is best for you. What size grips, semi-auto or revolver, what calibers you can handle. Many instructors have large collections from which you can find out what works best for you.

4) Learn the truth about guns and what they can and cannot do. There are allot of tall tales about guns "just going off", the myth of the cop killer bullet, and other crap. Learn why hollow points are actually safer and more humane than other ammo.

Its good to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun then be forced to wait 10 days before you can actually have it. Its just like insurance.

Forgive my obtuseness ... but just what might a firearm be "insurance" against that one couldn't wait 10 days to use it for?
