GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 21, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Security Guard Killed at Illinois State Capitol
"About an hour before the shooting, the owner of a local gun shop, Birds 'n Brooks Army Navy Surplus, recognized the gunman when he entered his shop as the person who jumped his counter on Sept. 14 and stole a shotgun, Burton said.
"We believe it was the same shotgun" used in the shooting, Burton said.
The gunman, who this time demanded a high-powered rifle, was described as in his 20s, wearing a light blue shirt and bluejeans.
The owner retreated to his office and retrieved another shotgun, but wounded his own son in the forearm in the confusion, Burton said. The gunman left, and apparently headed for the capitol building where he shot the guard just inside one of the building's entrances. "

2. Minden teen dies after gun incident (NV)
"A 14-year-old Minden boy died about 1:40 a.m. Sunday when he put what he thought was an unloaded handgun to his neck and pulled the trigger, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Officials were not releasing the name of the youth or the location of the shooting, other than to say it was in the Indian Hills development at the north end of Douglas County, sheriff’s spokesman Tom Mezzetta said.
The boy and a 14-year-old acquaintance got two loaded handguns while committing burglaries in Douglas County, Mezzetta said."

3. D.C. Gun Ban Repeal Set Aside
"Washington (AP) - The Senate has set aside its version of a bill that would repeal the District's strict handgun laws.
Senate backers tell The Washington Post that they don't have the votes to get the measure out of committee as part of the D.C. appropriations bill.
A measure still pending in the House has more than enough support to come to a vote before the November elections. It would repeal the city's decades-old ban on handguns and semiautomatic weapons and make it legal to possess handguns in homes and workplaces. It would also keep city lawmakers from enacting new gun control laws."

Please, Republicans...shove that one through. Everybody knows what DC needs is more guns...in a pig's eye. And of course, it's always great when the GOP demonstrates its racism and contempt for democracy.

At the time of the shooting, the boy was staying with relatives at a home on White Earth Lake, which is east of White Earth, authorities said."

5. Teen pleads guilty in Snohomish revenge killing
"EVERETT, Wash. -- A 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty in what investigators say was a revenge killing, and a 15-year-old portrayed as the instigator could learn soon whether his case will be sent to adult court.
The shooting death of Lawrence Kloes, 49, a Snohomish electrician, was a "grown-up" crime that "merits grown-up consequences," Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Matt Hunter told a judge Monday.
Superior Court Judge Gerald L. Knight began what could be three days of hearings to determine whether the aggravated first-degree murder charge against the 15-year-old Bonney Lake boy should remain in Juvenile Court."

9. City alert in threat to Bush (NY)
Guess he didn't realize that "I need my gun to fight the government" was just blowhards babbling like idiots....

"Lawrence Ward, 59, left his upstate New York home Wednesday with a .30-30 lever-action hunting rifle in the trunk of his car, telling a neighbor, "I'm not coming back."
The document, reviewed by the Daily News, said Ward sent his ex-wife a CD that mentions killing both Bush and Democratic rival John Kerry.
Judith Ward told The News she divorced her husband four years ago after 18 years of marriage because "he was a wife-beater and other things I don't want to talk about."
Authorities said Ward has a criminal past dating to 1991, including an indecent sexual proposal charge.
The neighbor in Bainbridge, a community about 40miles northeast of Binghamton, told authorities that Ward "frequently spoke of 'fighting the system' and other anti-government topics.""

12. Police call Ramsey man 'serial killer' after two shootings
"The mysterious shooting deaths of a woman in her bed on Sunday and man snacking in his kitchen were connected on Monday to a 20-year-old Ramsey man, authorities said.
Anoka County Sheriff Bruce Andersohn said Joshua A. Krueth, who was arrested Sunday afternoon, gave statements to investigators that led them to believe he was responsible for the deaths of Suzanne Kaye Fischer, 59, and Lawrence Plessel, 60, on Sept. 4.
Both were from Ramsey and both were shot with a high-powered rifle while in their homes. Andersohn said police could not determine a motive for the killings."

When officers arrived, they found Debra Jackson, 47, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died.
"These crimes have got to stop. Innocent people are getting hurt," neighbor Victoria Todd said.

17. Firearms trial begins today for "person of interest" in holocaust museum
"The man police have called "a person of interest" in the arson at the CANDLES Holocaust Museum will be in federal court today on firearms charges.
Joseph Stockett, 57, has not yet been charged or arrested in connection with the November 2003 fire. He was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after selling his car to a neighbor for $375 and a gun while the neighbor was wearing police surveillance equipment as part of the arson investigation.
Tape of the conversation revealed Stockett saying he needed a gun because he was on his way to a "major confrontation with the Jews," according to Tribune-Star archives."
