go back to populist hell.

My question (I ask it here occasionally) was; Was the AWB worthwhile, given 20/20 hindsight. I think it was not.

Unfortunately, the powers that be deemed my question to be "AWB sunset gloating", and locked my post within 8 minutes (so much for discussing the issues).

So in reply to "gospelized" who stated that Gore didn't alienate anyone with his support of gun control, I submit that Gore was quite a popular politician in Tennessee, prior to his White House days. He also had a pretty good NRA rating (a "B" IIRC).

Vice President of the United States, 1993 - 2000 (Elected 1992; re-elected 1996). U.S. Senator, 1985-93 . U.S. Congressman, 1977-85 Elected 1976 (94%), re-elected 1978 (unopposed), 1980 (79%) and 1982 (unopposed)].

Gore lost Tennessee by 8 points in 2000. He didn't even carry his old congressional district.

Obviously there were other issues, but Gore definitely alienated significant numbers of Tennessee voters during the course of his vice-presidency. His support for gun control is often associated with this alienation.

Had Gore carried Tennessee, most Americans would not know the definition of "chad".

As for anyone who doubts that Democrats losing majority in the House + Senate in 1994 was due to gun control legislation, I'll just refer to Bill Clinton's comments on that.

Later (probably much later),

An alienated populist

1. considering it cost us majority representation in the house and senate...
absolutely not.

I own so called assault weapons and can tell you that the difference between a preban and a post ban are often very very minor... I purchased my Romanian AK47 with both a 30 and 40 round clip during the apex of the ban, legally from a gun dealer. The ban really did nothing but allow the dems to commit political suicide.

3. I think your thread was locked
Because a moderator had asked people to post AWB sunset related posts here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=118&topic_id=86348&mesg_id=86348, in order to consolidate discussion in one thread rather than having multiple ones about the same topic.

Other than that, I agree with you.

7. that was definitely the case - thank you for reading carefully
I do not lock threads based on ideology. I am sorry if the original poster missed that point in the initial lock. However, there should now be no confusion at to why this thread is locked.

Plenty of Americans are dying in foreign lands because some people loved gun control here at home so much.

5. gee

Odd how so much depends on yer point of view. Or perhaps something else.

Me, I'd say that plenty of USAmericans (and a whole lot more other people) are dying in other people's countries (and going without jobs and homes and health care at home) for a whole lot of reasons, one of them apparently being that a few people love their guns more than anything else, including simple reason.

6. Funny that our trigger happy friend doesn't want to blame the gun lobby
that funneled millions into putting the GOP scum into power, isn't it?
