I get to go shooting in 2 weeks....
for the first time in years.

I'm going to a hotel in Wales that does introductory sessions for clay pigeon shooting (which you probably call skeet shooting). It's expensive (£35 for 30 clays including gun and cartridges) but I think I'll treat myself anyway.

Last time I shot anything was 10 rounds from an SA-80 on a short Army range about 5 years ago.

So.....how'd do you like THEM apples?

P.

(I have no idea what that last phrase means, I'm just being feisty).

Certified as the "World's Worst Wing Shot"

8. Somebody once told me that because of clay pigeon shooting.....
archeologists of the future would dig up fields and conclude that we were a bizarre race who worshipped and sacrificed ashtrays...

2. Wales, you say?
You may need some of these useful phrases:

Helo - Hello

Sut ydych chi? - How are you?

Ble mae tafarn? - Where is the pub?

Cwrw! - Beer!

Wel, dyma i chi ddefaid da! - My goodness, what magnificent sheep!

Ofcourse, if you're Welsh, I humbly apologise for being culturally insensitive. :D

But I think it involves a lot of phlegm.

3. Have fun and be safe.
If there's a safety orientation, pay close attention...and make sure everyone else in your group does, too.

Skeet isn't my personal cup of tea, but a lot of people think it's fun.

5. Have been shooting trap and skeet for years.
Even got my wife started. She loves it, ands getting pretty damn good. Just recently started shooting sporting clays.
The best thing about sheet, trap, and sporting clays is, nothing dies.
Enjoy.

7. So what's the difference between skeet, trap and sporting clay?
I have absolutely no idea....Unless it's something to do with whether you shout "PULL!" or not.

9. Try to help.
Trap shooting is at clays, going away from you, at different angles.
Skeet shooting involves crossing targets, either singles or doubles from a high house and a low house, changing stations in between.
Clays involve all of the above, and more. Clay represent more of a hunting scenario, with passing shots, running shots, flushing shots, and overhead shots. It,s quite a challenge. Each station is a different shot or series of shots.

14. didn't think the SA-80 would fire 10 rounds without jamming.
I remember hearing during the first gulf war SA-80s were withdrawn and L1A1s were re-issued due to jamming issues.
anyway I hope you enjoy the shooting, clays are good fun and a test of skill.

16. They got it right eventually......sort of.
I read a report about the complete fuckwittery of the Procurement department of HM Forces, who insisted on buying complete turd and paying 20 times the going rate for it. The jam rate of the original SA-80s was unbelievable - in some conditions they'd fail to fire 90% of the time.

Not really the kind of weapon to trust your life to!

18. cool..
I haven't gone shooting in months. Been too busy with work. I sold my WUM-1 and haven't replaced it yet. I have a dozen other rifles but that one was the most fun to shoot.

I'm going to build an STG-58 on a DSA receiver, and hopefully get an HK94 clone at some point (with A3 stock and Aimpoint).

19. Clay pigeons are best broiled
Have a blast on your trip to Wales, no pun intended.

There are various shotgun sports among which are skeet, trap, sporting clays, and five stand briefly described at the following site:
http://www.claytargetsonline.com/aboutthegames.php

I enjoy all the above sports but my preference is international skeet which is an Olympic sport.
