Poll question: T or F? For a liberal place DU is a friendly place for gun control
advocates?

This poll was inspired by
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x65774
which currently has 95% voting that DU is a friendly place for gun enthusiasts (which is, of course, open to interpretation, depending on how you define "gun enthusiast"...)
and
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=1791620&mesg_id=1791620
which currently has 49% of DUers who voted supporting waiting periods, AWB, no CCW, and gun registration. It also has 74% of DUers supporting at least two of those, as I write this post.

1. I voted true for both polls. I think DU is friendly to gun . . .

enthusiasts and to gun control types. Depending, of course, on what your definition of enthusiast and control is.

If enthusiast implies stockpiling weapons and believing you're right to gun ownership is somehow given by god and you should therefore have whatever the hell you want, then no.

If control implies going from house to house confiscating all firearms, then no.

DU is not friendly to any of the above, but it's friendly to those in between, IMO.

2. I wouldn't call DU at large hostile to gun control.
I'd have to say the vast majority of DUers support the status quo as far as gun control goes. They might be for renewing the AWB and closing the gun show loophole or whatever else they've heard about on the TV, but I doubt most of them have a clue what the current federal laws are regarding guns. Most of them probably think the AWB bans machine guns too.

That poll with around 50% for registration still seems weird to me since other polls have shown far different results. I still think the options were seriously messed up. NO other regulation? Come on.

3. Whaaa Whaaaa ....
I could go get those results for you .... but why bother ? ...

OK: 50 % preferred ALL control measures indicated by the poll choices ... thats ALL regulations shown ...

So there ....

Your attempts to spin the poll on its head through red herring arguments were rejected even by gun rights supporters .... Go figure ....

That being said: I'd rather have liberal gun nuts than rightist gun nuts anyday ...

Now say something liberal ...

6. DU in general tends to be a pretty friendly place
whatever you stance on gun control.

The gungeonites on the other hand are a somewhat cranky lot. :P

Everyone's positions there are pretty well established, and at the risk of understatement, those positions tend to be somewhat inflexible. J/PS attracts those folks who are more passionate about the issue thus the temperature of the debate runs a little hotter.

7. I wholeheartedly agree
I've been here a while and on the whole DU is a pretty friendly place. Everybody gets cranky sometimes.

I think the reason the debate tends to center around the topic of guns is because opposition to the prohibition or drug war is largely noncontroversial here. I believe the drug war is generally a more important issue, and one that encompasses both crime and gun control, but it doesn't seem to generate the interest that gun control does.
