End of the Mod Term, Gungeonites, please read
Edited on Wed May-19-04 02:53 PM by lunabush
After tonight it is very likely you won't have Lunabush to kick around anymore, because, Lady and Gentlemen, this is my last mod day (most likely) and it will be one in which I have welcomed the opportunity to test wits with you."

Ask me anything.

Also, let me get you started by saying, please, guys, try to be nice to one another. We're all democrats here. Different stripes, to be sure, but all Dems. We need everyone on the board and a few tens of million more to re-defeat Bush* in the fall. Please don't piss people off and drive them away with extreme rhetoric on either side of the RKBA issue.

If you aren't a Dem, and you post here, thinking you are somehow benefiting the 2nd Amendment - think again. You are doing no favors to your cause and only serve to make it tougher for the Dems who post here as they attempt to convert other Dems to reasonable gun control or loosening existing controls.

If you chew on the RKBA-issue and assume anyone who wants to possess a gun is a republican, that also diminishes the pro gun-control argument as extremist and alienates those who vote Dem but have strong 2nd Am feelings.

If you are a single issue poster - guns only, don't be too surprised when someone busts your chops about not supporting Dem causes - or - if they blast you for your single-mindedness to remove guns. Remember, the purpose of the DU board is to re-defeat Bush*.

In short, please, as always, argue the point, not the poster. I know, I know, save your breath.

Its been grand - if I am not re birthed as a mod in this forum I will probably come back to spout my "unique brand of wisdom"* from time to time. I have enjoyed my time down here, its been fun getting to know some of you - others, we never really met, but, hey, always a pleasure to read your thoughtful posts.

Thanks for tolerating me for the last couple of months, see ya around!

An homage to an old friend of some the Gungeonites...

I just want to say, on record, that "We did get something, a gift, after the mod-term... It was a little cocker spaniel... our little girl, Maddyson, the six-year-old, named it Checkers... I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we're gonna keep it."
(Los Angeles, California, September 23, 1952)

the Nixon Checkers Speech

* comment from some lunatic on some other board who kept getting banned over here, but felt compelled to keep coming over to offer his pearls of wisdom. Sorry if I used correct spelling - Freeper speak is much too hard to imitate.

1. Thank you for your service
You've done the job as fairly and even-handedly as anyone could.

You're a stand-up guy in my book.

8. thanks Slack
been a blast.

I think all of us mod types, in our tours, try hard to be even. It gets hard, but I think it might be easier to mod the gungeon than to post down here!

3. Gonna miss you...
By the way, one of the funnier things about the Checkers speech is that Nixon actually lies about his wife's name and birthday in the course of it.

7. I've got that fridge magnet!
The very first failure in the war on drugs!

There used to be a bagel shop in Santa Fe that had that image on front - on the back it had the slogan - Yep, we're both dead.

9. If you ever get a chance
Visit the Nixon library in Yorba Linda....it's hilariously surreal in just that way....

I studied with the great poet James Wright, who said "Someday we'll hear on the radio "Nixon is dead" and the first thought of millions of Americans will be "What's that bastard trying to pull now?" "

12. We're dead, really, really dead
was how it went, now that I think about it.

James Wright? No shit? Great quote, by the way.

17. Pretty funny
Yeah, Wright was a great teacher and a great poet...

Twilights

The big stones of the cistern behind the barn
Are soaked in white wash.
My grandmother's face is a small maple leaf
Pressed in a secret box.
Locusts are climbing down into the dark green crevices
Of my childhood. Latches click softly in the trees. Your hair is gray.
The Arbors of the cities are withered.
Far off, the shopping centers empty and darken.
A red shadow of steel mills.

11. never
http://www.bootsnall.com/namericatravelguides/ottawa/nov00ottawa.shtml

My neighbourhood (well, it's kinda near my house) is undergoing a revival of some sort. It always had the best bagels in town (from the Ottawa Bagel Shop) and a smashing magazine shop and health food store across the road (Take the #2, aka "The Freak Bus" down Somerset and Wellington or just walk up Holland to Wellington from Tunney's Pasture station and turn right...keep walking until you smell the yumminess). But further down Wellington/Richmond (past Kirkwood) it has developed into yuppie heaven. The #2 will take you there...and Westboro Station's at Churchill, which runs into Richmond.

Going West on Richmond...
Go to the Newport (334)...it's Elvis heaven! Oh wait, he's not dead. It is the headquarters of the Elvis Sighting Society. Elvis Lives Lane, an actual street of sorts, is located behind. Politicians and local celebs hang out here too...cool, huh? They also have CHEAP breakfast. Fry-up with coffee for $2.99...yum!!
Apparently the Newport is famous world-wide for this. You're forgiven if you didn't know.

So ... if you aren't a mod, will you tell us what you really think?

lemme see whether I can do one of those idiot smileyface things ...

15. Iverglas, the first thing I will do when I stop modding will be to
post my massive collection of illegal weaponry. Machine guns, assault weapons, hand grenades, both vintage and Iraq War era.

or

I will post my vita of writings as listed on the VPC and Brady sites.

I'll decide later.

I am a huge admirer of all things Elvis. In the early year, Elvis WAS punk rock - or, should I say, punk was the reincarnation of that very early Elvis. I have seen very early Elvis footage that makes the Clash look like Hansen. By the time he was on Sullivan he was tamed. That he turned into the sad, blubbery mess that he did makes him symbolic, at least to me, of all things wrong with America. We eat our idols, we destroy them. Someday I hope to travel to Elvis Lives Lane!

5. You got a pardon? Paroled?
Just Kidding.

I always figured moderating this forum might be better characterized as a sentence...

Anyhoo, I agree with the previous comments.

You have been as fair as anyone could.

You have been leanient, and your style was semi-hands off. Well, as hands off as you could be. I really liked that.

If you don't come back as a mod, don't be a stranger.

Something you said a short time ago really impressed me:

"For the Gungeonites who don't know, I'm a test and measurements kinda guy. I live in the world of standards. I have used and created tests that are quite sensitive in the measurement of human behavior. I have trained and created training materials for those instruments so that we can increase the likelihood that everyone who administers the final test product is indeed administering the same test as another test administrator."

"As a byproduct, I like to see stuff in nice, tight packages. In other words, I like standardization. I like to see that standardization used in any sort of measurement of human behavior.."

You're a stand-up guy in my book too, LB. :toast:

Thanks for doing what many folks wouldn't want to.

for a minute I couldn't recall what that lengthy quote was about. Now I remember - one of these days I got a killer tome on gun safety and requirements for concealed carry I am gonna drop on the gungeon. If the sheer weight doesn't kill ya'll, the tortured syntax of my writing will!

peace,

Craig

10. Ok gang, my purpose with this thread is not so much to say Goodbye
though I guess that is half the content - I got a little caught up in my little Nixon tangent. :eyes: Focus, Craig, focus.

Anyway, my point is, if I am here, if RoadRunner comes back here without me or if you get some virgin mods, try to treat each other well. You guys - and gal, really are a swell group of people. Individually you are some of the brightest folks on the board. In a pack, however, you turn into some of the deadliest!

Despite the tough issue down here, we're all on the same side - I really believe (excepting one or two of ya bastard double agents) we all want to see Bush* gone. Please, please, try to frame your arguments with the respect your fellow Dems deserve.

thank you.

so maybe one of these days you'll actually get good at it ;-)

Seriously though, I wouldn't want your job, but you seem to do it pretty well.

Sorry gun nuts and authoritarians, looks like reports of my demise were premature, if I can coin a phrase. You will have me to kick around a tad longer - and make sure and extend a hearty hello to the new mod, Bare Knuckle Liberal! He comes highly recommended and with a name like that, don't fling any poo his way!
