Mary Rosh Speaks Up FOR Diebold
Yes, America's scummiest pseudo-scientist is back, this time lying for the Reverend Moon about why you can "trust" blackbox voting...

Well, now I'm convinced it's okay...NOT!

"More seriously, Sen. Hillary Clinton warns Democrats how "hacking" easily can "skew our elections" and points out that a Republican is the second-largest manufacturer of electronic voting machines. Senators and congressmen are rushing to introduce legislation requiring that electronic machines have paper-recording devices.
What about the nightmare scenario that a Republican manufacturer secretly will program the computers to alter the election results? Such a scheme easily would be revealed as precincts check the machines for accuracy with sample votes both before and after the election. In California, machines were even randomly chosen to test during the day just in case their programs miscounted votes only during voting hours. If, say, one out of every 10 votes were switched, it would show up when sample votes are fed into the machines. "

Yeah, it worked like a charm in California, didn't it, Mary?

"After harshly chastising Diebold Election Systems for what it considered deceptive business practices, a California voting systems panel voted unanimously Thursday to recommend that the secretary of state decertify an electronic touch-screen voting machine manufactured by the company, making it likely that four California counties that recently purchased the machines will have to find other voting solutions for the November presidential election.
The panel also voted to send the findings of its recent Diebold investigation to the state's attorney general for possible criminal and civil charges against the firm for violating state election laws."

1. You're Known By The Company You Keep
We all know that Diebold is totally scummy. And so is John Lott/Mary Rosh.

3. I don't understand...
Edited on Wed May-12-04 09:28 AM by LibLabUK
I'm having trouble understanding the neccessity of voting machines, be they lever-action or automatic..err, sorry..computerised.

Your precincts and counties aren't much bigger than the wards in the UK where votes are tallied by hand after marking an X in a box with a pencil.

Why do you need to automate the process, which introduces errors of it's own (and is far more open to fraud), when hand-marking and supervised hand-counting will do?

The cost of electronic voting on its own is a good reason not to adopt it.

The whole selection fiasco of 2000, was looked at with great mirth in the UK (little did we realise the consequences)... but no one really managed to explain why the need for ballot-punching and chads at all.

4. Can't help you there...
except by relating this anecdote...during the space race, both the USSR and the US were faced with the need to make notes in a zero-G envirnoment where ordinary ballpoint pens wouldn't work.

NASA spent tens of millions to develop the zero-g pen that does not require gravity; the cosmonauts used ordinary pencils.

But yeah, it does appear the rush was to create a system that would be easier to gimmick--of the two largest manufacturers of voting machines:
--one is owned by a fanatical right wing loony and uses software written by a guy convicted of fraud
--and the other is actually owned by a Republican senator who has scored three "upset" electino wins in a row using his own machines.

By the way, it's hilarious to see Mary blame the new mess on Democrats and the mess in Florida...given his actual sworn "testimony" that "proved" that the only problem in Florida 2000 was that black Republicans were disenfranchised (and yes, he did too try to sell THAT malarkey in public).

5. Old urban myth
Are all your facts based on similar reliability?

http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp

Claim: NASA spent millions of dollars developing an "astronaut pen" which would work in outer space while the Soviets solved the same problem by simply using pencils.

Status: False.

And this group includes plenty of anti-gunners.
