GUNS IN THE NEWS - May 12, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

R&B figure John Whitehead shot dead in Philadelphia

The Associated Press May 12, 2004

John Whitehead, a prominent R&B artist best known for the 1979 hit song "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," was shot dead Tuesday, police said.

Whitehead, 55, and another man were shot by two gunmen while working on a vehicle, police said. The assailants fled.

Whitehead was shot in the neck and collapsed. Ohmed Johnson, who was shot in the buttocks, was in good condition early Wednesday at Albert Einstein Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said the gunmen fired a series of bullets; a young neighborhood girl said she heard 12 shots.

"Why did they do this to my dad?" Dawn Whitehead, 33, asked at the scene. "I just talked to him yesterday ... He was a fun person. Who would want to kill him?"

2. Metro Center Shooting Raises Gun-Ownership Age Issue
Metro Center Shooting Raises Gun-Ownership Age Issue

POSTED: 4:48 pm CDT May 11, 2004

JACKSON, Miss. --
Jackson police said changes in the law are needed to help cut crime in the metro area, citing Friday night's shooting at Metro Center as an example of what's happening all over the city.

The man charged with firing a shot inside the mall, Denarius Pryor, is just 19 years old.

While the single shot fired inside the food court didn't hurt anyone, Jackson Police Chief Robert Moore said most of the crimes involving weapons in the city are committed by people under the age of 25. He said he would like to see the age requirement raised for gun ownership.

"We have seen over and over again where these youngsters don't know what to do with a weapon," Moore said. "You don't go to a mall and shoot in the mall – that's stupid, no matter how you look at it. You don't do that."

Congressman helps subdue woman claiming to have gun

Associated Press

CLINTON, N.C. -
U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge helped police subdue and arrest a woman who interrupted an elementary school appearance Tuesday, saying she had a gun.

Etheridge was speaking to about 200 students at L.C. Kerr Elementary School when a woman started talking about visions of demons. As police approached her, she said she had a gun.

The Democrat from Lillington told WRAL-TV that the woman said, "I'll kill you," then reached into her purse. He said he grabbed the woman, who was within a few feet of him, and held her arms to her side until she could be subdued.

Fayette County sheriff wants gun rights restored

The Associated Press
May 11, 2004

Fayette County's sheriff, who pleaded guilty to racketeering and tax evasion in 1989, is seeking a second pardon to get his gun rights restored and end his status as a rare sheriff without a gun.

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles has scheduled a June 2 hearing for Fayette County Sheriff Hubert M. Norris, 69.

Norris, who was sheriff from 1974 to 1989, spent almost three years in prison for federal racketeering and tax evasion charges that were part of a bootlegging investigation.

His political rights were restored in 1994, and he began campaigning to return to office. He ran for sheriff in 1994 and 1998 but lost. He won a County Commission seat in 2000 and was elected sheriff in 2002.

Awful light sentence for a very serious crime. He should never have been allowed to run as a felon and he should never be allowed to own a gun. If he is caught with a gun in his possession he should be tried as any other felon in possession with a firearm.

And no applications are being processed due to non-funding. Don't look for him to get gun rights restored...unless he makes some convoluted 10th amendment argument.
The fact that BATF(E) is not processing apps for restoration has been decided in court, IIRC.

Off topic...Spell checker suggests BATF be replaced with BARF...sometimes appropriate.

...should have their right to vote restored, since so many of them belong to socio-economic, racial, or ethnic groups that tend to have a high percentage of registered Democrats.

I can take it or leave it either way - Either restore all of their civil rights or none of them. It makes no difference to me.

56. The only objective solution IMO is all or nothing
Restore ALL civil rights (including voting and RKBA) or NONE of them.

Right now the nation has a patchwork of different systems, which leads to inequalities like the voter registration issues in Florida in the 2000 election.

22. easy
after Asscrack decides that all those local city council-people who voted to comdemn the Patriot Act have committed "treason," they will be "prosecuted and convicted felons."

When the local voters vote their favorite local pol back into office, they will have "elect(ed) a convicted fraudster to public office." That's probably how the voters down there see it.

Dictionary.com:
Treason: 1. Violation of allegiance toward one's country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies.
2. A betrayal of trust or confidence.

No... it's a situation solely confined to the US: the threat of school children committing mass murder.

The funny thing is they all pick guns as their weapon of choice... no cases of 15 kids being killed with a fish-slice, or baseball bat.

Funny that.

Well not really... very sad.

Similarly, if there is a small group of people who insist on drag racing at 150 miles per hour, would you consider changing the speed limit from 55 to 50 an effective solution?

Wouldn't you target the people doing 150 instead?

Police Lt. Jim Neumayer said Conrad Cooper, 18, was jailed on suspicion of felony assault. Police found the gun, a BB gun designed to look like a semiautomatic handgun, in Cooper's car.
The two victims, Big Sky and Sentinel students, were in a separate car. Neumayer said Cooper knew one of the two."

MARION -- The concealed carry law most likely won't mean the return of twitchy-fingered gunslingers yelling "draw!" at high noon.
<snip>
According to FBI Uniform Crime Reports, violent crime rates are highest overall in states that don't have laws or have limited laws that permit carrying concealed firearms for self-defense.

The law has detailed restrictions on who can receive a license. Restrictions to apply include that a person can have no current or past felony or drug offenses. Also, a person cannot have been found mentally ill by the courts. There are also restrictions concerning juvenile records.

"The owner of a chain of pizzerias and his son were shot repeatedly at close range in their home in Newburgh, N.Y., on Monday morning, and the police appealed on Tuesday for information about the shooting.
The restaurateur, Cosimo DiBrizzi, 64, and his son, Nicolas, 26, were flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where they were recovering Tuesday from surgery, said Detective Sgt. Margaret R. O'Neill of the Town of Newburgh police. Both men have been too sedated and traumatized to answer many questions, she said.
Cosimo DiBrizzi's wife, Angela, briefly saw the gunman, whom she described to the police as a white man in his early 40's with a medium build, Sergeant O'Neill said. "

42. Abilene man kills wife, self
"An Abilene man shot and killed his wife Tuesday afternoon before turning the gun on himself, said Abilene police.
Max Apis, 45, used a handgun to shoot Maria Apis, 31, in a car in front of their home in the 3000 block of Post Oak Road, police said.
''It appears at this time that he shot her multiple times, then turned the gun on himself,'' said Sgt. Roger Berry, a detective with the Abilene police Crimes Against Persons Unit.
Police have not yet determined exactly how many shots were fired at the woman, Berry said. The woman was shot in the upper chest. The man appeared to have died from a gunshot wound to the head, Berry said. "

47. Teens' website spawns warrants which lead to assault rifle cache
"EUREKA -- Five law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, served five search warrants Tuesday morning that led to the seizure of four assault rifles, a shotgun, another rifle and four handguns.
Five teenagers, ranging from 16 to 18 years old, and an adult about 50 years old, were the subjects of the warrants.
The department said a "concerned" adult approached Eureka Police Department's School Resource Officer, Louis Altic, last Thursday and told him about a website some teenagers had created. Police are not releasing the website's address, but said it had pictures of some of the teens holding assault rifles, surrounded by ammunition and displaying gang signs.
Other areas of the site included a "Who do we hate list," biographies of the four teens that included statistics on how many fights they were in and their win and loss records. Another area of the site included license plate numbers of people on the "Who do we hate list."
The site also has an area named "Bum hunt" that shows pictures of homeless people around Eureka."

58. Bum hunting--what a sport!!
It must break some people's hearts that it got interrupted before a few kills were notched.

For that matter, I wonder if there WERE any unsolved shootings of homeless people in the area? There's no end of the "fun" guns can bring to young folks.

52. Officials investigate double shooting (SC)
"Detectives are investigating a double shooting, as one woman recovers at Carolinas Medical Center. Nikki Fleming, 29, of 924 Great Falls Highway, delivered herself to the Chester County Hospital after being wounded by a shotgun blast Saturday morning after 3 a.m.
Wilton Mabry Weir, 68, was found dead at the residence he shared with Fleming.
"Both victims had gunshot wounds," Det. James McNeil of the Chester County Sheriff's Office, said.
Officers responded to the Great Falls Highway residence after 911 reported two hang-up calls from there, according to a police report. The reporting officer, K. A. Crank, found broken glass on the front porch and small droplets of blood."

54. Police find cash, guns in drug investigation (PA)
"CLEARFIELD - Police found two handguns and a safety deposit box containing more than $76,000 during an ongoing investigation of a local man they say was one of the largest cocaine dealers in the region.
Lamar D. Robinson, 22, was arrested last week when police said he came to collect $8,700 owed to him for drugs by a confidential informant working with police. State police began investigating Robinson about two months ago and, using an informant, obtained six ounces of cocaine and two pounds of marijuana from him in 10 days, according to Cpl. John Bravis.
Investigations into the case continue and police have located two handguns at Robinson's Vairo Boulevard apartment -- a Llama .45 caliber semi-automatic and a Ruger P94 .40 caliber. Both guns were loaded, police said."

57. Cousin says he was hired to shoot defendant, disrupt trial (AL)
Just a couple of fun-loving "enthusiasts" with guns....

"A cousin of murder defendant John Wesley Stacey says Stacey hired him to shoot him in the back, apparently in an effort to disrupt his trial.
Dale Snellgrove, who said he fired the shot, was not charged with any crime as of Tuesday.
Snellgrove, 34, said Stacey phoned him early Tuesday. "I'd be doing him a big favor is the way he put it," Snellgrove said.
Stacey, 54, is on trial in the shooting death of Henry Gill, 52. Gill suffered five shots from a .22-caliber pistol belonging to Stacey, according to the defendant and others who testified. Stacey claims self-defense.
Snellgrove said Stacey told him that he would forget the remainder of a debt on an 1988 Astro van and would give him an additional $500 for shooting him."

It was on the opposite side of school property, but still accessible to students.

62. Girl, 15, charged with bringing gun to school (SC)
"INDIAN LAND - A 15-year-old Indian Land High School student was charged Monday with having a weapon on school grounds after a loaded gun was found in her pants.
Sheriff Johnny Cauthen said a student reported that the girl had the gun in her possession.
Bryan Vaughn, transportation and safety director for the Lancaster County School District, said ILHS Principal Mary Bernsdorff and School Resource Officer Corey McIlwain took the girl to another room and Bernsdorff searched her. The loaded, .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol was found concealed in the front of the girl's pants, Vaughn said. Because the information school officials received specifically named the 15-year-old, they did not have to do a sweep of the school or lock it down, Vaughn said."

About 9:15 a.m., the suspects, wearing masks and gloves, entered Fidelity Federal Bank & Trust, 2400 N. Federal Highway, and ordered everyone inside to the floor, said FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela.
