GUNS IN THE NEWS--April 16, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Nation's Gun Lobby Creating News Company
Guess that TV station went the way of the theme restaurant....

"WASHINGTON - The National Rifle Association is creating a news corporation, starting an Internet talk show and preparing to buy a radio station to speak about candidates and gun rights at election time despite new political ad limits.
LaPierre said the NRA is taking several steps to become a "legitimate packager of news" like newspapers and TV networks, including hiring Cam Edwards, a conservative talk-show host from Oklahoma City.
Started with a $1 million investment, the Internet programming features news briefs in the morning and at noon, followed by a three-hour afternoon "news show/talk show" with Edwards as host. "

Like newshound Matt Drudge, Cam wears a hat indoors. They need them to keep the air conditioning from making a distracting piccolo noise as it blows past the holes in their head.

that makes me glad I ain't got a speck of whatever's rattling around some people's skulls...

Have I got a radio program? No.
Has Cam got a radio program? Evidently he's got or had a second rate Rush Limbaugh imitation in Oklahoma...which he is abandoning for a streaming website financed by the scum of the earth.

By the way, can anybody figure out why rootin' tootin' liberals on a board for Democrats and progressives are all trying (and so ineptly at that) to defend this conservative pinhead?

5. Woman Kills Attacker (MI)
I am not sure if this was posted before . . .

http://www.freep.com/news/latestnews/pm19339_20040414.htm

Woman Kills Attacker, 8 shootings Claim 4 lives

A woman shot an armed man to death Tuesday after he attacked her as she was entering her east-side Detroit home, police said.
The woman, who owns a car dealership, was at the side door of her home in the 15200 block of Troester at 7:45 p.m. when a man ran up behind her brandishing a nickel-plated handgun, Officer Derek Jones said.

*snip*

She tried to shut her screen door, but he pulled it open and began shoving her into the house, police said. As they struggled, she pulled a handgun from her purse and fired about five shots, Jones said.

*snip*

Jones said the man was 42 years old and had a criminal record for breaking and entering homes. Police declined to release his name pending notification of his relatives.

Jones said the woman had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

*snip/more*

What is interesting is that this self-defense shooting is lumped in with several criminal shootings:

"Detroit police said citywide, at least eight people were shot in less than four hours Tuesday night. At least four of them were killed in the incidents which included a carjacking and an incident police said was drug related."

Not a "street-mounted security camera" in the US of A, surrepticiously observing criminals!

Maybe it came loose from its moorings somewhere in England, and wandered over the pond ...

Hey, slackmaster missed this one:

Police are looking for two teenagers seen
on a street-mounted security camera robbing
a local woman recently.

A street-mounted security camera robbing a local woman.

Was it armed?

As I often do as I read the local paper (which I have seldom done since it was bought by Conrad Black and got even worse), I lament the passing of copy editors from the earth.

31. Well, it looks funny if you
strip "a street-mounted security camera robbing a local woman" out of context.

But, in it's original context, I think it works, marginally. I mean, do you see something on the camera or the tape/display? Mounted in the street, above the street, next to the street?

On second thought, you're right...what a cumbersome sentence.

When the door was opened, another man followed him inside.
The men went directly to the center of the room where the victim, Freddrick H. Williams, was robbed of some cash and shot several times, wounding him fatally, Sgt. Stephen Staletovich said."

23. Student's toy gun prompts lockdown (FL)
No one was injured when a 15-year-old student took a wooden rubber-band gun to his South Miami-Dade middle school Thursday, but the lockdown it caused brought panic in a community still stunned by a slaying at a nearby middle school.

In the hours before the boy was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and disruption of school functions, hundreds of parents outside Centennial Middle School knew only the barest of facts: Neighbors had called police about 9:30 a.m. after seeing someone wave around a rifle, stash it in his coat and walk into the school.

''From a distance, it can be confused with a rifle or sawed-off shotgun,'' district spokesman Mayco Villafaña said....

(snip for copyright compliance)

...The weapons charge against him is a felony, said Miami-Dade state attorney's spokesman Ed Griffith. Even though the toy looked nothing like a firearm up close, Villafaña said, it qualified as a weapon because it ``has a trigger mechanism and can fire a projectile.''

26. Lead Levels High in Some Gunshot Victims
"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Survivors of gunshot wounds that leave bullet fragments lodged in the body may face a little-recognized long-term risk--elevated lead levels.
Researchers found that among 365 gunshot victims with retained bullet fragments, 12 percent had blood lead levels at or above the threshold for "medical concern" three months after being shot.
This percentage declined over time, fluctuating between two and five percent over the next year and a half. Still, researchers say even these lower figures suggest that of the 1 to 2 million gunshot survivors in the U.S., tens of thousands could unknowingly have lead levels high enough to threaten their health.
Study co-author Dr. Stephen J. Rothenberg recommended that gunshot victims with retained bullets have their blood lead levels monitored over time. "

32. OSP shooting justified, jury rules
"Oregon State Police trooper Nick Neville was justified in shooting a man who threatened to kill him at Valley of the Rogue State Park on March 26, a grand jury determined Thursday.
A Jackson County grand jury deliberated five minutes after hearing roughly two and a half hours of testimony about a shoot-out at the park’s boat ramp that injured Neville and left his assailant, Jeremiah Paul Scanlon, 48, of Las Vegas, dead.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Beth Heckert released details of the hearing in a statement Thursday afternoon. Grand jury proceedings are closed to the public and media. Neville, who has a .38- caliber bullet lodged under his shoulder blade, had a doctor’s appointment Thursday and was preparing for a trip, so he wasn’t available for comment after testifying."

33. Police say suspect pulled gun on 3 officers (IA)
"A man tried to aim a loaded revolver at three Davenport beat officers who were investigating him for a sexual assault downtown early Thursday morning, police said.
Danny L. Long, 46, of Stockton, Iowa, reached behind his back and pulled the .22-caliber gun from his waistband after an officer informed him that he would conduct a pat-down search for weapons, Davenport police said.
Cpl. Jason Willey immediately grabbed Long before he could point or fire the gun, police Capt. Dave Struckman said. Willey and Officer Andrew Harris took the gun after a struggle where Long continued to try to aim his weapon at the officers, he said."
