Northwest Indiana cops indicted on gun charges.
Looks like the ATF has some competition...

Three police officers working in the sheriff’s department of Lake County, Ind., are facing indictments for allegedly selling military-grade weapons on the Internet.

The U.S. attorney’s office says a federal grand jury returned firearm and tax violation indictments on Edward Kabella, Joseph Kumstar and Ronald Slusser.

The three allegedly bought 74 fully automatic machine guns and 92 laser aiming devices from a reputable dealer and resold them. Online sales of the guns and parts allegedly netted the officers thousands of dollars.

Federal prosecutors allege that some of the guns and parts were used in crimes in Canada and Mississippi.

“When you sell things like this to anybody on the Internet, you have no idea who’s going to end up with them,” said David Capp, U.S. Attorney for Northern Indiana. Capp made the announcment about the indictments during a Thursday afternoon news conference at the Federal Courthouse in Hammond.

2. Talk about no one liking you...
no other police officer is going to support them, and no criminal is gonna like them very much in the pokey.

4. did they disassemble all of them and just sell parts? odd....
the firearms are worth more in parts salvage than whole?

how big a department did they work for? I'd find it hard to order and have parts shipped to my hospital, but I could make a good living if I could get by materials management.

The lasers? are they a controlled NFA part? ??? what? how? ??? I know some things you can't export but???

6. I think the infrared lasers are restricted
by the FDA because you can cook someone's eyes with an invisible beam. And they are definitely restricted for export-all gun parts are.

Good to see that law enforcement is doing their best to stay busy-selling illegal machine guns to random people on the internet should generate some additional crime. At 10 years and 250k in fines per charge, I hope they enjoy the rest of their natural lives in prison and lose all their assets to cover the fines.

"For example, in May 2011, authorities in Montreal, Canada, confiscated four gun barrels that listed the Lake County, Ind., Sheriff??s office as the registered owner."

9. Just a guess...
As imported parts for "non-sporting use firearms", they're treated the same way as receivers and frames (recall a few years ago when the ATF instituted the barrel ban on imported parts kits).

11. Pool your money, buy one or two, sell them, use that money to buy more.
As long as they're worth more on the black market than the police are charged for them, it works.

13. If they are posing as legit LE agency buyers...
they would get the normal retail price which wouldn't be much over that of the semi-auto civilian-legal ones.

Government purchase of full-auto weapons does not operate in the same economic niche as civilian-market machine guns.

10. LEOs are just civilians with a badge.
Just like the civilian population a small percentage are criminals.

Don't you ever watch TV? :)
