More on the Lakeland FL Shooting
http://mikeb302000.blogspot.com/2011/09/sunday-with-nra.html">JadeGold reported this one the other day, but some interesting details have come out now.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/09/18/records-shooting-suspect-killed-previous-wife/">Fox News reports:

The man accused of killing his wife and then shooting two church pastors had pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 10 years of probation in 1987 in the slaying of a previous wife, according to court records.

Jeremiah Fogle, 57, is charged with murder and attempted murder after Sunday's shootings. Authorities said Fogle shot his wife, Theresa, burst into the front doors of the church and shot the ministers before church members tackled him.

I suppose we can't blame Florida or the NRA for the fact that he got off so easily when he killed his first wife. But, it does seem like 10 years of probation is a bit light.

The easy access to guns, however, is the direct result of Florida's lax gun laws and the NRA's continued fight to keep them that way. I also spread a little blame around for all who support that sick system.

Recently a commenter expressed some difficulty in understanding what I mean by http://mikeb302000.blogspot.com/2009/07/guns-and-women.html">"guns are bad news for women." Perhaps he didn't go to the link I provided which highlights a famous Hemenway study. Where there are more guns, more women die in domestic abuse, compared to states with fewer guns. It's simple.

In today's story another fascinating angle came up.

Authorities and relatives said he and Theresa Fogle had been members of the Greater Faith Christian Center Church before starting their own ministry out of their home.

Theresa Fogle's sister Maria Beauford said the couple ran a transportation business together. They had been members of Greater Faith, but had started their own ministry out of their house and regularly hosted Sunday services.

Fundamentalist Christians praying together in the trailer park home of a wife-killer-turned-preacher. And the gun-rights community supports people like this, at least until they go too far, then they're banished.

What's your opinion? Is this an "Only in America" story, or what?

Please leave a comment.

1. No one supports his behavior. But had he been convicted of felony murder
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 06:09 AM by geckosfeet
for killing his first wife, I don't think that he would have been able to legally buy and/or posses a gun.

on edit: and I never, nor will I ever, visit your blog

5. But he did get his gun via the gunshow loophole.
I heard they were delivering door to door as of last month.

3. Can you imagine...arrested for murder, plead guilty to manslaughter, & get 10 years probation???
Holy shit, what is wrong with that picture?...guess someone somewhere didn't realize he was a threat to society?

Supposedly a conviction for this 2nd degree felony in FLA should get a bit stiffer sentence:

"If convicted of Manslaughter, a judge is required to impose a minimum prison sentence of 9¼ years in prison and can impose any additional combination of the following penalties:..."

But HE got 10 years probation.

Yep - only in America.

4. I suppose the gun gets the blame....or religion...or the NRA...
That gun corrupted a poor innocent man, and the justice system realized it...so 10 years probation it is.

7. A convicted felon?
He shouldn't have had a gun. Just goes to show you that people who are felons have problems obeying the law. Doesn't matter if it's a law against killing people or possessing a firearm under disability, they just can't be bothered to play by the rules.

What's living in a mobile home got to do with anything? Is that some kind of jab at poor people?

13. no the whole thing is a jab at gun owners
You are the guys who cannot seem to hold on to your guns. Every one, except the occasional zip-gun or home-manufactured piece, comes from the law abiding gun world. That's why gun control laws are aimed at you. Obvioulsy you need to be constrained to do the right thing, like not selling your guns to just any old body, or not leaving them unsecured where they can be easily stolen.

18. The truth is easy for you.
You just make it up as you go along. Not a word you publish has any shred of credibility. And now you want to use your fabrications as some kind of pretense for collective punishment of otherwise lawful citizens? I suppose there are still people in the world who hold to the old saying about "A lie told often enough becomes truth."

8. Pass another law!
I suppose we can't blame Florida or the NRA for the fact that he got off so easily when he killed his first wife. But, it does seem like 10 years of probation is a bit light.

So why mention them in relation to his criminal action and subsequent sentence?

The easy access to guns, however, is the direct result of Florida's lax gun laws and the NRA's continued fight to keep them that way. I also spread a little blame around for all who support that sick system.

The NRA has been a huge proponent of keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals, and they support heavy sentences for criminals who are caught with guns.

Under Florida Law, Mr. Fogle could not lawfully own a firearm. Would you like Florida to make it super-duper illegal for Mr. Fogle to own a firearm?

Recently a commenter expressed some difficulty in understanding what I mean by "guns are bad news for women." Perhaps he didn't go to the link I provided which highlights a famous Hemenway study.

Newsflash: Many people are not clicking on your blog links to figure out what you are trying to say. If you want to post here, you'll need to post your opinion here. I'm not going hunting for your writing someplace else; It's not that important.

Where there are more guns, more women die in domestic abuse, compared to states with fewer guns. It's simple.

That's the price of living in a society with relatively free access to firearms. It's simple.

In what way does the gun-rights community support people like this? In what way does the gun-rights community support religious nuts with a murder history owning firearms so that they can go forth and murder again?

How's the weather in Italy today? Cloudy with a 100% chance of speculation again?

10. You're slipping, only TWO blind links to your blog in this post
"perhaps he didn't go to the link I provided which highlights a famous Hemenway study."

Perhaps because NO ONE wants to go to your blog. If you want someone to read the shit you write, post it here instead of trying to make a profit off you blog.

"What's your opinion? Is this an "Only in America" story, or what?"

Ah so now you are going to blame it on the country YOU abandoned but you are willing to bash and bitch about every chance you get.

Worry about gun control in italy.
