FL Credit Card Processing Business offers free AK-47 to new clients
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Sign up to do business with one Florida company and you could score an AK-47 as a little signing bonus.

The owner of Merchant Service.com says if you do enough business with them, they'll give you a voucher for the high powered weapon.

Critics might say it's like something out of the wild west, but the company says they're just helping keep their clients safe.

Gee at least they could've given away an American made gun!

1. AK-47 is NOT a high powered rifle.
It has about the same energy as a .30-30 which was marketed in 1894.

27. I wouldn't want to get hit with a .22 LR anywhere.
But if I had to get hit by a .30 cal, I'd definitely pick a 7.62x39mm, since it's the weakest .30 cal round in common use.

The traditional definer of "high powered" is the 30-06 round. One of those sits around 4,000 joules of muzzle energy.

The lowest powered centerfire rifle cartridges in common use are 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm, both of which will give you about 1,500 joules of muzzle energy. That's roughly comparable to a .44 Magnum revolver.

29. If I had to get hit by a .30 cal
I'll pick the .32 S&W...it has a bit less "oomph" than the 7.62x39mm, with only 126 joules of energy :-)

30. Here one for you...what's the lowest-energy round currently in your inventory?
No air rifles or BB guns, gunpowder-powered projectiles only.

I think I can beat most everyone: I have a couple hundred rounds of 4mm rimfire for my Walther PPK. They're used in a conversion kit that lets you use the PPK for indoor gallery shooting. 8 grain bullet; in a rifle, the muzzle velocity is around 1000 fps. In my PPK it's probably more like 700 fps.

Makes a .22 short look downright powerful...

37. Just .22 LR
I wish I had a bunch of 2 mm Kolibri, but if I did I'd be rich.

The rounds and the gun that fires them are very rare.

36. By definition not high-powered
An assault rifle, a real selective-fire one, includes as its definition the use of an intermediate powered round. That means more than a pistol round, less than the standard high-powered combat rifle that preceded assault rifles, rounds like the 7.62x54mmR from the Mosin Nagant or the .303 British from the Enfield. These tended to have around 3,000 or more joules of muzzle energy. They also have quite a kick.

The first modern assault rifle, the Sturmgewehr 44, used the 7.92x33 Kurz ("Short", it was the high-powered 7.92×57mm Mauser round cut down). We even get the term from that rifle, "sturm" means "assault" in this context, and "gewehr" means "rifle." The AK-47 uses the 7.62x39. These both have around 2,000J or less of muzzle energy.

Anyway, the civilian semi-auto version of the AK-47 uses the same round as the assault rifle.

So, no, "high-powered" does not accurately describe the AK-47, by definition.

2. I'll say. Which eastern European country did they import those from?
Edited on Mon Sep-19-11 06:26 PM by TheWraith
Oh and the reporter needs to learn what a "high powered weapon" is. 1,500 joules of muzzle energy doesn't qualify unless you're talking about a pistol.

6. China had the "Type 56" infantry rifle for awhile.
However, it's illegal to import Chinese arms into the US, since the early 1990s.

Most likely it's eastern Europe. It's big business over there to take surplussed Soviet bloc weapons, refit them with civilian-legal trigger systems, and sell them on the sporting market.

15. Type 56 = "SKS"
Its a more traditional rifle with a fixed magazine line the M-1 Garand.
It does use the same 7.62x39 round as the AK 47.
I have a MAK-90, the Chinese civilian AK 47 version which uses the same ammunition.
I would classify it as a "carbine".
I've got to admit it's a better free gift than a toaster or umbrella.

26. No, the SKS was something different.
The Type 56 was China's knockoff of the AK-47.

I'd still rather see them give away something made in the US.

Nobody's handing out AKs.

The merchant is handing out $50-$750 vouchers depending on how much business you do with them in the first three months. You can cash the voucher for face value, or use it for anything you like. It's basically a visa gift card.

But hey, he got *even you* talking about his service.

Don't feel like too much of a sucker, it was designed to get people talking.

The company, not a licensed arms dealer, is quick to point out that they don’t have a stockpile of AKs at their home office ready for pick-up.

“Keep in mind we are not simply handing out AK-47 assault rifles to anyone who opens an account with us,” says Gino Kauzlarich, President of MerchantService.com, Inc. “Instead, the merchant receives a voucher that can be used at any reputable gun shop where they must go through the proper background checks and waiting period that the law requires.”

Not interested in arming yourself? The voucher can be redeemed for cash.

The merchant uses the term AK-47.

If anyone at this board who advocates stringent firearms control dares to use that term in reference to a weapon used in a crime or found in the possession of a criminal, they are jumped on with heavy boots and stomped severely.

Let alone use the term "assault rifle". That's a hanging offence, I believe.

What are you working so hard not to get here?

<big graphic saying FREE AK-47>

Today, it was announced that a leading credit card transaction processor with a major presence in Florida is giving away AK-47 assault rifles to businesses and individuals who sign up for new accounts with the company.

On the front page of the company’s website under the bold heading “Free AK-47 Giveaway” is the tag “Do business with Us and get a Free AK-47 up to $750.”

an example of AK-47s in the news

If there actually was an AK-47 involved, your point might be closer to being on topic.

But since the 'ak-47' in this instance isn't actually even a real gun (much less a real AK-47), it's kinda silly to claim this as 'AK-47s in the news'.

But keep talking about it, I'm sure Kauzlarich appreciates every mention. :)

Perhaps you are seriously suggesting that giving away a coupon good for a gun purchase is not giving away a "real gun" ...

The corporation is the one that decided to use the "AK-47" hook. I think it needs a talking-to.

33. What about the subthread?
You claimed they needed a talking to. I say they don't. Giving away a gun is a common promotion. They ALWAYS give a voucher for the amount of the gun in the promotion. Everybody in the gun world knows that. They give vouchers because the business (bank, truck dealership) isn't an FFL and can't legally transfer a gun. Choosing an AK-47 gets more attention than choosing a Winchester Model 94 or Ruger Ranch Rifle.

39. We do generally have a problem with ignorance
The term "assault rifle" does not apply to probably 99.9% of its use by the media.

Willful continued misuse of the term is ignorance. Either that or purposeful dishonesty towards the public.

The company used "AK-47" to get headlines, that's all.

They are actually giving a $750 signing bonus to everybody, that's it.

All they do is basically say "You could use this money to buy an AK-47 if you want."

The whole thing's pretty lame IMHO.

34. The problem is not the AK-47 label.
The problem is normally the "assault rifle" label.

In the USA, a real AK-47 (full auto machine gun) is all but impossible to get. Semi-auto clones are very easy to get. There is nothing wrong with referring to a clone as an "AK-47" because "everyone" knows what you are talking about. The catch is that these semi-auto clones are not assault rifles, and the media and other ignorant sources like to wrongly apply that label to them. This leads folks to then be confused about the weapon being referenced due to the terms being used incorrectly.
