Bloomberg writer admits to perjury to obtain FL concealed firearms license

"In a September 12, 2011 article for Bloomberg.com, writer John Crewdson has admitted to committing willful perjury in order to obtain a Florida concealed weapon/firearm license, a second degree misdemeanor under Florida statutes.

The subject of Mr. Crewdson's article was to criticize H.R. 822, the proposed National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, sponsored by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and Heath Shuler (D-NC). Unlike driver's licenses, each state now decides which concealed carry licenses it recognizes within its borders, resulting in possible felony convictions in one state for doing the same thing which is perfectly lawful in another. The proposed legislation would mandate uniform recognition of concealed carry licenses, greatly expanding the rights of properly licensed concealed carriers. The bill does not create federally mandated minimum standards, nor does it require states to change their laws to permit carry in places prohibited to their own licensees. It merely requires states to recognize out-of-state licenses issued by other states the same as their own resident licenses.

(SNIP)

Before the application could be approved however, Mr. Crewdson had to answer "YES" to question 6, which asks, "Have you received training with a firearm as required by Section 790.06(2)(h), Florida Statutes, relating to competency with a firearm?" He also was required to have his signature notarized affirming that he had been furnished a copy of Chapter 790, Florida Statutes, relating to weapons and firearms, and that he was knowledgeable of the provisions contained therein. Chapter 790.06, Florida Statutes clearly states that completion of any firearms safety or training courses available to the general public by a law enforcement organization shall be attested to by an instructor who must maintain records certifying that he or she observed the student safely handle and discharge the firearm. Mr. Crewdson, in his own article admits, “There was no such documentation in my case.”, and therefore knowingly and willfully lied on his application in response to question 6."

Lies from gun-restrictionists? Whooda thunkit...

6. Was that an intentional joke, or just fortuitous circumstance?
"There was an error processing the request."

Probably just because I'm trying to see it from a .gov computer, but that was funny as all hell...

9. Heh, it worked once I hit "Refresh"...
"Smith & Wesson produces small, high-powered handguns under the LadySmith brand."

This guy is truely an ignoramous. None of the "LadySmith" series pistols are at all "high-powered". Unless you compared them to his mental accumen.... (Well, O.K., they do offer them in .357 Magnum... still not what I'd class as "high-powered", but I may be biased.)

11. In Bloomberg's New York City you too can own and even carry a handgun ...
IF you are rich, famous or well connected. Of course, Bloomberg wants to see the unwashed masses disarmed. I would too, if I had his money. After all, he knows that the cream rises to the top.

Lifestyles of the rich and packin': High-profile celebrities seeking gun permits on the rise

Never fear J.Lo - your husband Marc Anthony is one of dozens of celebrities authorized to carry a concealed weapon in New York City.

Singer Marc Anthony is one of dozens of celebs, millionaires and high-profile athletes authorized to carry a concealed weapon in the city, records show.

Other big names licensed to carry a gun include actor Robert De Niro, shock jock Howard Stern and supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis. Billionaire Donald Trump and his son, Donald Jr.; celebrity lawyer David Breitbart, and artificial-heart inventor Robert Jarvik can also carry steel, police records reveal.

Mets third-baseman David Wright has a permit to keep a gun in his city penthouse. Martha Stewart's daughter, radio host Alexis Stewart, also has a permit.

Note that I have absolutely no problem with rich and famous people owning firearms and legally carrying them concealed. I am opposed to eliminating those who are less privileged from legally owning firearms because of the expense and effort required to get the necessary licenses.

14. why do we need warmed-over right-wing opinion here?
What's the problem with just giving us Crewdson's account of the event?

I don't want to read some asshole gun militant's opinion of it thank you very much. Give us the facts, give us your opinion of them if you like, leave the crap where it belongs.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-12/concealed-handguns-in-new-york-city-backed-by-243-members-of-u-s-congress.html

Florida, which granted my permit after I viewed a half- hour, online safety video, now says it made a mistake. “Unfortunately, our office made an error in completing your application,” wrote Sterling Ivey, a spokesman for the state licensing division in an e-mail response after I asked why somebody with no handgun experience got a permit.

While Florida law doesn’t set a minimum number of hours for safety training or specify what the training must include, it does require trainers to keep documentation that applicants “have been observed safely handling and discharging the firearm,” Ivey wrote. There was no such documentation in my case.

... I also sent a “Certificate of Completion” that I earned by watching an online video about gun safety offered by the Maryland Police Training Commission, a state agency. I never left my desk and never touched a handgun.

As of last month, Florida had issued 843,463 such permits, 93,722 of them to people who don’t live there. Its concealed- carry law, adopted in 1987, doesn’t distinguish between in-state and out-of-state applicants, said Ivey, the spokesman. ...

Read it for yourself.

He lied? Or Florida fucked up?

Florida fucked up.

The only question is: how many times, and how seriously?

I happen to be clear on all counts <felony convictions etc.>. In 2007, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper in Fort Lauderdale reported that 1,400 people in the state had permits even though they had been sentenced for major crimes, including assault, drug possession, sexual battery and manslaughter. Judges had withheld formal convictions under a state law that allowed the practice.
