Man tried to use potato as silencer on rifle

A Key West man released from prison earlier this year was picked up early Friday after deputies said he tried to use a potato as a silencer on an assault rifle.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office arrested Leo Edwin Haney, 22, on charges of loitering and prowling, carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon, resisting arrest and tampering with evidence.

At about 1 a.m., witnesses told deputies Haney and another man were walking around the Majestic Oaks apartment complex, 5800 SW 20th Ave., with a long gun wrapped in a shirt. Once deputies reached the area, the two men ran off in separate directions. They soon were caught.

The other man told deputies he ran in a different direction than Haney because Haney was mad about something and the man wanted to get away from him.

2. What an amateur.
A 2L soda bottle is much more effective, if not as nutritious, than a potato.

4. It's one of those urban legend things. A very large
spud (think big ass backed potato) may work to some degree on a .22. But this dumb ass had a "red potato" on the end of a center fire rifle thinking it would do something other than make a big mess.

5. "SKS assault rifle"
Argh! The SKS is a semi-automatic carbine. That's what "SKS" stands for: Samozaryadnyj Karabin Simonova; samo, "self"; zaryadnyj, "loading"; karabin, carbine; Simonova, genitive (possessive) of Simonov, i.e. "Simonov's."

That niggle aside, I remember we had spud guns when I was a kid, but this takes it to a whole new level.

8. An SKS is an assault rifle?
It isn't even an "assault weapon" under the idiotic Assault Weapons Ban.

It has no detachable magazine, the main requirement to be an "assault weapon."

As normally purchased, it is even missing some optionals:

No folding or telescoping stock
No pistol grip
No flash suppressor

It does have a bayonet though.
