Wayne La Pierre at the United Nations
http://www.youtube.com/embed/-RCfWm5822M

Typically belligerant: "those working on this treaty have asked us to trust them... but they've proven to be unworthy of that trust."

Typically contentious: "our Bill of Rights, endowed by our Creator, and due to all Human Kind. therefore the NRA will fight with all of its strength."

In homage to his hero, http://thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/07/brad-kozak/nra-on-the-uns-arms-trade-treaty/">Brad Kozak posted the entire text of the speech. Naturally, except for a couple of sons of "Blue Helmets" the commenters were right there with old Brad in slamming the UN and pretending the exaggerated claims of La Pierre are valid.

But I seem to recall other times when Brad's boss attempted to dispel the fear. Robert posted several times about the fact that American civilian gun owners have nothing to worry about, for example this one entitled, http://thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/06/robert-farago/the-u-n-small-arms-treaty-is-not-aimed-at-grabbing-your-guns/">The U.N. Small Arms Treaty is Not A Gun-Grabbing Conspiracy.

My opinion is that Wayne La Pierre is a well-paid showman. He's scamming the membership he claims to serve by pretending threats exist where none do. He did it with Obama's supposed gun banning. He and his organization duped the members out of tens of millions on that one. Now it's the Small Arms Treaty.

What's your opinion? What do you think the gun-rights folks would have said if Helmke had earned more than a million dollars a year as head of the leading gun control organization? Don't you think that would have generated a bit of criticism?

Yet, those same folks lay down for La Pierre's flim-flam game, or like Brad Kozak, they actually support and encourage it.

I just don't do a lot of forums, and you rarely see much 'blog flogging' on DU...at least from members who aren't ultimately served a stone pizza..

3. Jesus Christ Wayne, are you back?

What's your opinion? What do you think the gun-rights folks would have said if Helmke had earned more than a million dollars a year as head of the leading gun control organization? Don't you think that would have generated a bit of criticism?

According to the Better Business Bureau, Helmke made $249,555 in 2010. Good pay for easy work, write an occasional op ed in Huff, go on Fox twice a year and make shit up off the top of his head, and no large membership to please. Given the differences in membership and revenue, you do the math.

The hard part is telling that many lies in five minutes.

Personally, I can't stomach him or Laura Ingram, but if I must

17. La Pierre earns 5 times that, maybe more
Your description of the "easy work" Helmke does could easily be said of La Pierre. The only problem is it's not true. Both are hard working men. The difference is Helmke was trying to do some good for the country while the huckster La Pierre is just a mouthpiece for the gun manufacturers who pay him royally. Don't forget the $40 million of YOUR money he spent trying to oppose Obama - a failed and useless waste of YOUR money.

23. First

Sorry, Helmke is not doing anything good. The noble lie is not noble. If he wanted to something good, he could tried to make the organization be more intellectually honest and at least use honest and logical arguments. Helmke is huckster that makes stuff up off the top of his head, including claiming that Brady is not a gun control organization. Helmke is just like any other self serving Republican, Brady and VPC are all Republican founded and ran, pushing his own issue for his own reasons.

La Pierre is a lot of things, but not the mouthpiece for the manufactures. They don't pay him shit. The give the NRA money to help pay for safety classes etc. The ILA is a separate operation as required by US law, and the manufactures have their own lobby. He is the mouthpiece for forty percent of the US and four million members. I know that is the favorite canard on your side because it makes siding with corporate/inherited wealth astroturf feel progressive. It also makes the less dim witted drug user feel better about funding the source of most gun violence in the US. The typical bong owner is responsible more than the NRA and the vast majority of gun owners combined.

Don't forget the $40 million of YOUR money he spent trying to oppose Obama - a failed and useless waste of YOUR money.

They never spent any of my money to do shit, because I never gave them money.

8. Against my better judgment, I'll take this bait...
I'm not an NRA member. I'm not a member of the ACLU either.

The NRA focuses on one specific amendment to the Constitution and defends it against any infringement. This makes them bad.

11. oh lord, poor you guys!
One minute you have lawodevolution representing DU in The Guardian, next you have Wayne LaPierre representing the US at the UN.

Not officially in either case, of course, but you know how it looks to the rest of the world. ;)

12. LaPierre represents the NRA as an NGO, not the
US as a whole. Besides, some may view him as an improvement over Bolton. But then, I doubt no one on the planet could be worse than Bolton.
