DU's "Guns" forum is now 2nd most posted Topic Forum on the site.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=204

Though forums have undergone some modification over time, DU'ers may wish to take note of which Topic Forums are most visited. The "Guns" forum has always ranked, I believe, in the "Top 5," but for an issue which many deem "peripheral," the respectable second place status could mean that its truly unique status is drawing in more DU members over all. The uniqueness comes not from being yet another gun site, or even a "leftist" gun site (there are some), but because the forum is within a major progressive and Democratic web site. I don't believe that truly exists anywhere else.

1. Promotional links to right-wing sites and constant praise for Republicans...
...are rare at a Liberal Democratic site.

That much is true.

17. It's amusing to sort by author - you'll notice that the Duke of Hormel
has probably 5 out of 20 full pages of OPs. Don't know if there's a way to tell who responds the most, but I bet I could name the top 5 or so...

interpretation of the Second Amendment is the most important issue for any city, county, state, or national election in the country. The root causes of crime, anti-social behavior, and tyrannical government, are best dealt with by being armed at all times, and being prepared to defend yourself in any conceivable venue or situation to confront enemies both from within and without.

Because of the importance of gun rights, around 50-75 people create thousands of posts on the DU Guns forum calling each other names, and using terms like "gun nut," "anti," "racist," "Brady Bunch idiot," and "penis extender." These confrontations are leading to a gradual coming together of ideas, issues, concerns, and solutions and we are all better off for these patriotic discussions. If only Congress could take a page from these discussions and apply it to the debt ceiling talks.

In the future when everyone in the USA is armed, it is conceivable that there will be no crime, and therefore no need to spend tax money for police or military forces. Any amount paid for creating an armed society as envisioned by the Founders is well worth the price of a statistically low number of injuries and deaths along the way.

24. Liberal gun owner
I am a liberal gun owner and I very rarely bring up the subject in conversation. I never try to push any perspective but try to explain a different point of view. I was given a BB gun when I was 8 (I guess)and surprisingly my father was brought up as a Quaker. Today I am appalled that the police don't take much notice unless someone has been murdered or there is a bank or convenience store robbed at gunpoint. Other than that, as long as no one gets hurt, nothing much seems to get done. So, I choose to defend my home from intruders if necessary. I have taken safety courses and am an NRA gun safety instructor. I used to belong to a pistol range and found that the members of the range were some of the most supportive people of any group I have ever belonged to. I can't tell you if anyone in my neighborhood owns guns. I do not choose to offend or scare anyone by owning guns but I do wish that instead of the police taking a defensive stand toward gun owners that they would offer a class and let us know what they would like us to do in case we have had a forced entry at our home and we do own a gun for home defense. The police seem to take the stand that no one is as safe as they are and that we would be safer without guns even though they tend not to be around when a crime is being committed. I don't mean to throw this in anyone's face but I did want to express my feelings about gun ownership from someone who considers them self a political liberal. Thanks for listening.
