Absurd lawsuit alert.
http://www.wnbc.com/money/2905271/detail.html

New Jersey (surprise) decides to sue a car maker for not telling people that criminals like the headlights. Authoritarianism at work.

1. Seems like a perfectly good lawsuit to me.....
"The suit, filed in Superior Court in Somerset County, also alleges Nissan profited by having customers purchase anti-theft kits that should have been provided for free. The company's dealerships also profited by performing repair work on cars victimized by thieves, state Attorney General Peter Harvey said.
"We allege the company sold cars with these fancy lights, but kept consumers in the dark about how attractive the headlamps were to thieves," said Reni Erdos, director of the state Division of Consumer Affairs, which filed the suit. "Nissan's actions, or lack thereof, rendered consumers vulnerable to the criminals who targeted their vehicles." "

4. Blame
Why not blame both? Some producers of goods make money off of overpriced replacement parts ... and believe it or not ... not all companies are protectors of the public welfare. Making parts to be attractive and easily stolen sounds like negligence to me. Although certainly the thieves, if caught, should pay restitution and do jail time.

6. Geez
Your excuse sounds the same as blaming an attractive woman for being raped. Disgraceful.

9. Funny...
Didn't see a damn thing in the article about New Jerrsey suddenly decided this theft was no longer a crime...

For that matter, fencing stolen parts from thieves and selling them again to consumers is not unknown in the auto repair racket....

10. Maybe I should sue Nissan too
Very shortly after I bought a brand-new 1985 Nissan pickup someone stole one of my tail light assemblies, which cost about $180 to replace.

I implemented my own anti-theft system - Square-drive screws and Locktite 242. That cost me less than $10 for a lot of peace of mind.

12. Corrupt Auto Industry?
Sounds like the corrupt auto industry at work again. Seducing people into buying cars with the high intensity projector headlights that make night driving safer.

Selling cars with expensive components that can be stolen, how shameful and corrupt. All auto manufacturers should be immediately forced to list the replacement cost of every subsytem on the window sticker. Then the sticker can run down the window around the front, over the top and down the trunk.

Weren't we making jokes about this a few weeks ago? Like holding Ford responsible for bank robberies where the get away car was an Explorer?
