Faux News: Obama: We're Working on Gun Control "Under the Radar"
On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial "large magazines." Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, "to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda," she said.

"I just want you to know that we are working on it," Brady recalled the president telling them. "We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar."

1. And the conservatives will use this to get gun owners to the polls ...
to vote against Obama.

Perhaps Obama is unaware that the Brady Campaign is run by people with a Republican background. I think they just threw him under the bus.

4. Might attract some votes from the majority who aren't obsessed with guns.

The majority of gun obsessed are TBaggers and right winger. They'd turn out to vote against Obama if he gave all of them a free "assault" weapon to add to their cache.

11. That's only because they don't understand the issues and what you guys consider "responsible" guns.

That message needs to get through. Won't be too hard to do.

7. If as you say the majority are not "gun obsessed" please explain this map...

I would suggest that most people look at firearms and concealed carry with a realistic approach and don't live in fear of honest gun owners or those who are licensed to carry concealed.

8. Insulting middle class Americans
because they own guns might serve some partisan bug up your ass but its no way to build an effective coalition.

That kind of self serving chickenshit attitude is straight out of the Karl Rove Playbook: Generate mountains of incoherent social policy to feed the base and plan to win with a bare plurality. Its partisan divisiveness at it's worst. All because you think "toting guns is tacky."

13. You build the coalition with the majority who don't obsess over guns, nor want them in public.

Guns are not good for society. I'm not for the outlawing of them -- Christ, I'm not for witnessing mass whining among those who can't live without them. But, things need to change and attitudes need to change. We don't let people walk around with bombs -- similarly, most guns in public need to be taboo as well.

15. You get started on that right away, okay?
Attitudes are changing, just not the way you'd like them to.

Gun control has been fading as a social and political issue with increasing speed for the last decade, so there should be a lot of underemployed malcontents sitting around in Mom's basement looking for a cause celebre. We all know you and only you can provide that inspired spark of leadership they so desperately need to gel.

The NRA has about 4.5 million members, Brady has about 20, so you can use that as a starting point. You said there are over 300 million people out there that "think" just like you do, so you should have no problems lining them up at the local grocery store. Good luck getting any politicians to actually speak out on it though. Supporting gun control has been a major losing proposition anywhere outside of a few cities.

And while you're getting your membership buttons and petitions printed you'll have less time to post inane comments here. See, everybody wins.

16. *sigh *
The majority doesn't obsess over guns because they don't have a problem with them. The only people who are obsessing about them are on the far left and right. Those on the fence tend to go pro RKBA. That's why the issue has been such a loser for the Democrats. That's also why some Democrats obsess about RIGHT to keep and bear arms and not about "teh gunz " themselves. Only a fool is willing to waste all that political capital on such a ubiquitous piece of technology.

After having barfed up so much incoherent public policy on the wrong side of a wedge issue the best thing for Democrats to do is shut the fuck up about it and stop giving the wing nuts on the right ammunition for electoral victory.

Do I really need to repost that fucking map?

28. Most people are not concerned about licensed concealed carry ...
"Shall issue" concealed carry is very common in our nation and some estimates are that 10 million people have carry permits. Florida alone currently has 813,127 valid concealed weapons permits.

Open carry has caused controversy in some urban areas but concealed carry does not because people never see or know that the person in line with them at the store has a concealed handgun. Since licensed permit holders rarely cause problems, most people are not at all concerned about an honest person carrying a firearm. You are an exception.

There is absolutely no reason to make legally concealed firearms taboo in public. Statistics show that they do actually deter crime. If you disagree, present a reliable source that proves allowing licensed concealed carry increases crime.

Also be aware that even if you succeed in making concealed carry illegal, criminals would still continue to carry illegally. Why would you want to make a criminals life easier by disarming his potential victims? How many people who once had concealed carry licenses would have to be robbed, killed or raped before you realized that your idea was folly.

29. You are the one "obsessing" with guns
Edited on Fri May-27-11 01:57 PM by The Green Manalishi
The rest of us are sane, normal people who only get ornery when dimwit fascist jackboot lickers (such as the Brady Bunch) natter about imposing on our rights -*any* of our rights.

I will not have a problem with licensing and registration when and and only when I have ironclad guarantees that any such lists will not and can not ever be used for retroactive confiscation, such as has been done in California.

I wouldn't have a problem with rather stringent qualifications for concealed carry in exchange for the absolute right to carry concealed once a completely objective and nationwide test (involving safety, what constitutes self defense, and gun handling, for the sake of argument) was in place and the *right* of any citizen passing some such common sense combination of background check and demonstrated competence to carry guaranteed regardless of the whim of any state or city officials.

2. Key phrase, "Brady Recalled"
So it's not necessarily what the President actually said, it's what "Brady recalled he said".

Not that anyone in the Brady group, especially Sarah, would ever embellish or twist things to make themselves still sound relevant, especially when there is no way to check out their claim since it was all "under the radar" and super secret.

But trust the Bradys, gun control is on the rise, but please have the good taste not to actually mention it out loud to anyone for a while, OK?

Reminds me of the old woman with the pie for Sheriff Bart in Blazing Saddles.
