Port Moresby shocked by horrific home invasion

A horrific attack on a family in Port Moresby has prompted calls for Papua New Guineans to be granted the right to arm themselves against murderers and rapists.

In an incident that shocked a city accustomed to a high level of violence, 10 drunken bandits last week attacked a family home, murdering a man who tried to protect his wife and two daughters, aged nine and 13.

The woman and her daughters were forced to watch as their father was shot and chopped up with an axe.

The three were then dragged outside and pack-raped.

...

Prominent PNG commentator Frank Kolma yesterday called on authorities to grant citizens the right to bear arms, and to implement a permanent curfew in lawless Port Moresby.

This article is a bit more appropriate than the last one that was locked. PNG and Austrailia have similar gun laws and this incident led to calls for more liberal RKBA for the citizens of PNG.

2. The level of violence that people
are capable of is just sickening.

3. More from the article
"The issue of new gun licences was suspended two years ago, sparking a lucrative market in the transfer of existing licenses which at more than $5000, are out of reach for the average citizen."

D.C. requires a handgun license, but stopped issuing them IIRC.

"While many Gerehu residents wrap their homes in barbed-wire and steel mesh, often the best protection is for residents to band together with fellow tribesmen."

WOW

4. My ex left PNG during 'independence' in the mid-70's
After which, the country descended into a state of anarchy from which it has yet to emerge. I also worked with a guy who lived in Port Moresby who came home one night to find his (chain-link/barb-wire fenced) house ransacked, and his two doberman guard dogs beheaded. He returned to Brisbane with his family within the week.

The local cops can be pretty mean too ... one day someone stole one of our company vans (in Moresby) which was spotted the following day. The cops gave chase and decided the best way to stop it was to fire a tear gas shell INTO the van while chasing it. What we got back wasn't worth keeping.
