Senators get gun rule exemption
JACKSON - The Mississippi Senate on Thursday gave 29 of its 52 members permission to bring firearms on state Capitol grounds.

For Luna, a Democrat sponsored action, even if it does give special privileges to the ruling class. :)

1. Did they also give themselves pay raises
or any other perks at the expense of the tax-paying public?

the two sets of rules are moving even further apart?

3. I'm curious.
Why only 29 of the 52? Are they the only ones this affects or are all allowed but these 29 are the only ones who hunt/carry? Are the other 23 barred?

Slightly silly questions, but the article is thin on detail.

I also wonder if we're seeing a return to special privileges for lawmakers that don't extend to the general population. Shades of the Federal exemptions from labor laws, etc. may be raising their heads on the state level. Case in point: I'm driving 80 on the parkway (65 mph limit) mph to get to the State House to testify, cover the proceedings, or otherwise do business with the State Legislature in KY. I get a ticket. A Representative or Senator is driving 100 mph in a 35 mph zone going to the State capitol for ANY reason while the Legislature is in session and he/she is exempt from the speed laws. I figure they should plan better or get the ticket.

5. Be afraid...
Be very afraid of a government that thinks it's OK for them to have guns but not for you to have them.

6. The wealthy, powerful and well connected...
take care of the wealthy, powerful and well connected.

From the "Gun Control Act of 1968"

http://www.atf.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/gca.htm

(20) The term "crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year" does not include --

(A) any Federal or State offenses pertaining to antitrust violations, unfair trade practices, restraints of trade, or other similar offenses relating to the regulation of business practices, or...

What this boils down to is that Joe Six-Pack who has no other blemishes on his record other than a misdemeanor first offense DUI (if the
maximum possible sentence that could have been imposed exceeds two years), or had been arrested for a simple juvenile altercation, then poor ol Joe is prohibited for life from owning a firearm.... Sorry, Joe, no gun for you! OTOH, if Mr. Wizard-of-Wall St. has been found guilty of bilking millions of dollars from retirees and pension funds, then they can still purchase and own a firearm.

Unsubstantiated rumor # 6,478.

I've read that there's a little known policy that allows Congress Critters to be deputized as Federal Marshall's thereby conferring them
the right to carry a concealed firearm in any State in the union.

Can anyone confirm or dispute this?

7. There was,
But the US Marshall service revoked the Honorary Deputy Marshall privileges. I am unsure if these privileges were for all Congress Critters who wanted them or US Senators only.

8. Why do you think some many congress critters want to overturn the DC gun
Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 05:43 PM by reddouglasfir
ban of 1976?

They want to pack heat!

This has nothing to do with poor black cabbies, just rich white politicans wanting to carry a snubnose.

10. Michigan's legislature was smart enough...
...to not have included the state capitol buildings as 'no carry zones'. It would have been very hypocritical of them to do otherwise.

11. Heated Senate debate erupts in gunfight...
Or so the argument would go if it were regular folk being "granted" permisson to carry.
