Ill. committee passes gun bill despite veto threat
SPRINGFIELD (AP) — An Illinois House committee approved legislation letting people carry concealed firearms in public despite Gov. Pat Quinn's vow to veto that bill.

Harrisburg Democrat Brandon Phelps warned Quinn that opposing concealed carry will cost the governor during a politically sensitive time. State officials are working on a new state budget.

1. Last week they were close to a veto proof vote count
I think they need 70 votes to override a Quinn veto.

If Quinn sinks this, we are going to lose even more seats in the next election. It's pretty much a case of Chicago doesn't want it, per Daley's orders, and the rest of the state does.

If Daley and Madigan (speaker) get Quinn to kill it Quinn will be dead meat in the next election, if he isn't already with his 67% tax hike. We will lose the Governors office and very likely the House majority too. It's not just the gun CCW issue, it's this issue on top of the other issues they have dumped on the state.

4. Isn't it strange that the House sponsor of the bill is a Democrat ...

Quinn says he will oppose concealed carry
5:58 p.m. CDT, May 3, 2011

Gov. Pat Quinn today announced his opposition to concealed carry legislation up for debate this week in the Illinois House, saying allowing private citizens to carry loaded weapons is dangerous and would be detrimental to public safety.

***snip***

Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, the bill's chief sponsor, said he is close to securing a veto-proof, 71-vote majority. He plans to call a vote Thursday in the House.emphasis added

Phelps predicted Quinn's announcement that he would veto any concealed-carry measure will cost him key votes among downstate Democrats during a politically sensitive time. Both chambers are back in Springfield this week and hope to approve a budget for the next fiscal year before adjourning May 31.

7. The bullies are working to protect the freedoms of the people
and take back the ones that we've already been bullied out of.

If it's a matter of bullying to promote civil rights, I say bully on.

Yup.

3. Good for the IL Dems, seeing the right thing to do.
Hopefully enough of them break out of Daley's grip to pass this over Quinn's veto.

10. Need to push this one through and then on to WI
I've got relatives there and it would be nice if I could drive all the way to WI and not have to worry about various state laws.

8. Nah, that's irrelevant
I've been reassured by a "reliable source" here that "everyone" supports more gun control and the 2012 election will sweep in an all Dem gun control congress, start the repeal of all those wrong headed concealed carry laws state by state and probably start the formal repeal of the 2nd amendment.

Looking at Ann Richards who "courageously stood up to the bullies in the NRA" and lost her seat to Bush is all ancient history. Besides that probably didn't have anything to do with guns or gun control anyway.

Just like Al Gore losing his home state and Clinton's home state in 2000 had nothing to do with gun control either. After all what does that simple minded Bill Clinton know about politics anyway? The 40 plus states that have passed similar laws since then - are just an anomaly.

<sarcasm off>

Santyana was right about those that don't study history. The funny thing is, when we get our ass handed to us, they will blame independent gun owners who they are driving away with a stick.
