Saw a sign in a store today.
This morning my wife and I went to the computer service center that we regularly use. The lightning storm on Monday morning came in through the ethernet cable and damaged her ability to get online. Prominently displayed was a sign showing a silhouette of a semi-auto pistol inside a green circle (no bar) and the caption,"LAWFUL CONCEALED CARRY PERMITTED ON THESE PREMISES".

We had an enjoyable conversation about guns while he fixed the problem.

Since this is Texas such a statement isn't really needed, but it was fun for him to make it anyway.

22. As a matter of fact you're going to have problems in 48 states
The only safe place is here in Chicago, because even Wisconsin allows open carry. No gun problems here.

Traveling must be harsh when you're trying to avoid all 10 million law abiding citizens with CCW permits.. I guess?

18. If you go to the Florida elementary school where I work.
you will see a big sign which says, "This is a gun, tobacco, and drug free zone". The private company where my husband works also has a sign posted that guns are not allowed on their property. Private business, on private property, can keep guns off, just the same as individual property owners can. So much for take you gun to work (schools or business), Florida.

23. "Gun Free" just like Virginia Tech, Lane Bryant and Northern Illinois?
How safe you must feel, knowing that any mentally unbalanced person with harm in mind will see your signs and flee for fear of getting a misdemeanor ticket.

Nothing keeps you safe better than a sign. I'm assuming no teachers keep cigarettes in their purse or briefcases either, right?

And you wouldn't have armed guards if it was really a safe area. Got it.

40. Title 1 schools in bad areas
plus the one with 2 deputies, housed emotionally disturbed preteens. The deputies where there mostly for those kids. Kids could get very violent. Forget about armed intruders. One kid I worked with tried to stab his Grandma when he was 11, and attempted to strangle a teacher. Let LAW ENFORCEMENT deal with that, not the teachers. BTW, we called the deputies all the time. You think teachers should pull guns on these kids? I don't think so. Not only we aren't trained in GUNS, but not the LAW either. Deputies have both.

47. I think that you put far too much faith in law enforcement.
And not nearly enough in private citizens. I've seen enough of both groups' behavior to know whom I'd sooner trust with the power of deadly force.

51. It's not difficult to get trained in either.
Any effective teacher can manage it in a day or two.

And, by the way, those teachers? They do have to "deal with it" until the police actually "show up". If they do....

Most schools probably don't have the luxury of armed guards on campus.

Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 06:52 PM by spin
Obviously there are places you can't carry a firearm in Florida such as a school.

However I question your statement "Private business, on private property, can keep guns off, just the same as individual property owners can."

Florida Law Gives Employees the Right to Keep Firearms in Vehicles

Effective July 1, 2008, Florida residents will be permitted to bring their guns to work under a measure passed by Florida lawmakers and signed into law by Governor Charlie Crist on April 15, 2008. The new law, Preservation & Protection of the Right to Keep & Bear Arms in Motor Vehicle Act of 2008, bars public and private employers from prohibiting a customer, employee, or invitee from possessing a legally-owned firearm that is kept inside a locked, privately-owned motor vehicle which is parked in a parking lot, in most cases, even on an employer’s private property.emphasis added

***snip***

The Act, while broad in many respects, also contains several limiting provisos. For instance:

Employees who wish to keep a firearm inside their privately-owned motor vehicle must possess a valid concealed weapons permit (this requirement is not extended to customers and invitees).
All employees, customers, and invitees are prohibited from possessing a firearm inside a vehicle which is parked on any school property, at any correctional institution, on property owned or leased by a public or private employer which conducts national defense, aerospace, or homeland security operations, and on any property that manufactures, uses, stores, or transports combustible or explosive materials, as regulated under state or federal law.
