http://newsok.com/lawmakers-should-listen-to-chancellor-on-gun-bill/article/3551215GLEN Johnson has walked the halls of the state Capitol plenty of times. But Johnson, Oklahoma's higher education chancellor, finds himself there more often than usual this legislative session.
Besides educating a new crop of lawmakers about the inner workings of higher education, he is fighting hard to stop proposals to undo a ban on concealed weapons on college campuses. And like other issues that have no tie to jobs or economic development, it's an unfortunate time drain for Johnson and lawmakers.
Johnson suspects that the campus weapons issue has renewed interest because it's a hot topic south of the Red River. A bill working its way through the legislative process in Texas would allow concealed-handgun permit holders to carry their weapon into classrooms. Texas law already allows colleges and universities to decide whether to allow guns on campus except in buildings and at athletic events.
This is one of those times Oklahoma should not want to be like Texas. Oklahoma's college and university leaders are unified in wanting to keep the weapons ban. Much of the law enforcement community also is supportive of the ban. Even though proponents say what they want is safer campuses, the issue is more about politics than safety.
