Repub calls Iowa law ‘The Crazy, Give A Handgun-To-A-Schizophrenic bill
The Republican-led Iowa state House is considering a bill that would allow Iowans to carry a weapon openly or concealed in public without a license, permission from a sheriff, background check, or any training. The bill is known as “Alaska carry,” or the “Alaska bill,” because Alaska was one of the first states in the country to implement it. Arizona and Wyoming have similar laws.

In a “snafu” on the House floor yesterday, House Speaker Pro Tem Jeff Kaugmann (R) was caught privately acknowledging the danger of the bill while speaking near a microphone he thought was off, but was in fact turned on:

REP. STEVE LUKAN (R): The Alaska bill – what’s the Alaska bill? ...

KAUFMAN: The crazy, give-a-handgun-to-a-schizophrenic bill.

4. Personally I'm leary a bit about unlicensed carry...
But then again, why would a criminal bother with getting a license? Six of one and half a dozen of the other...

7. No shit. You would piss yourself if you saw what I picked up this weekend.
Of course I blame my wife. I think she was more exited than I was.

13. Not necessarily
The people have the right to keep and bear arms, but the 2nd Amendment doesn't prescribe that all forms of bearing arms must go unhampered. Personally, the way I see it is that a form of bearing arms must be independent of official approval; it's acceptable to require a license to carry concealed, provided that open carry can be done unlicensed. Conversely, if open carry is outlawed (as in, say, Texas), concealed carry should be unlicensed.

5. People prohibited from owning a gun or getting a normal carry permit are still not allowed to carry.
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 10:05 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
It would still be illegal for ineligable people to carry a gun.

The only thing the bill changes is the little card you carry in your wallet.

9. It is already illegal for the mentally unfit to have guns
There is no reason to oppose this based on the fear that mentally unfit people will carry guns. The only reason to oppose this is to block the super majority of gun owners who will never break the law from legally carrying.

18. Went right over your head, didn't it?
Until some due process is invoked- involuntary commitment, conviction of a felony crime, being dishonorably discharged from the military, etc- until that point, a person has a right to own a firearm.

We don't strip people's rights just because. Duh.

11. The training for CC is a joke anyway.......
The training is worthless and a waste of time.

I went to a combined Kansas / Utah class and there is no way people leave the class prepared to CCW and know what they are doing.

I would recommend just a background check and maybe a mental health check and then give the the damn license.

They want to let people do something....w-w-w-without getting a permission slip from mommy government?! Surely we all shall die a gruesome and horrible death!

Please.

Hysteria always follows these proposals. History always fails to bear it out.

Edit: Fixed pronoun-antecedent agreement.
