Certified Gun Trainer Faces 186-Count Indictment - concealed weapons permit fraud

A man certified in Kentucky to teach people gun safety has been named in a 186-count indictment.

Authorities said Henry Pruitt signed off on concealed carry permits even though his students were not adequately trained.

Some people even got their permit without ever firing a shot.

That's just one key part of the training that Pruitt is accused of skipping.

2. Yes, every subset of the population
has some percentage of members that are less than law abiding. Even police officers. What's your point?

I don't recall anyone claiming gun owners or CCW holders were 100% perfect. Just the fact they are less likely to be involved in crime than the general population.

19. The point is, the more stupid carry laws the GOP/NRA passes - the more permit fraud will occur
and the more fraudulent permit guns will be on our streets.

yup

3. Well this just does it for me. I am so overcome with emotion
and single instance events that I will surrender all my firearms and go volunteer for the Brady Campaign.

4. Aw shucks, Henry's heart was in the right place......
His mission was to get as many permits out there as possible.

I mean what's the big deal here?

5. Right. Our State Run ABC stores here in NC skimmed millions, guys with 800k
salaries in dump counties. Because of this we should go back to prohibition.

7. Sure it does. He broke the law to get more students to make more money
so just like the people skimming the ABC store he is a thief.

So we should make fraud illegal, oh wait.

8. Can you bring yourself to say he did wrong and should be punished?
Edited on Sat Feb-26-11 09:13 AM by TheCowsCameHome
Probably not, because it involves guns.

9. Oh it was state wide and involved millions. And yes like fraud permit boy here
they should all be in prison. This story has nothing to do with guns, it has to do with human nature and incentive based behavior (ie cheating). It appears he was caught as well, which is good.

The gun debate in the country is in a post ROE or BROWN v state. Only call is which side of history people land on..

10. Kentucky State Police caught him.
If they prove the allegations in court, they should fry him but good. The KSP also revoked all the CCWs he fraudulently signed and are requiring the persons affected undergo proper training.

His crime while certainly heinous enough is a little short of murderous Million Mom Marchers.

After helping to organize the Million Mom March, and even speaking at the event, Barbara Graham was convicted of shooting an innocent man. Now he is paralyzed for life. When police searched her home, they found three handguns and a Tec-9 "assault weapon." She received a life sentence on nine charges, including illegal possession of a firearm (guns are, for all intents and purposes, illegal to own in D.C.).

Annette Stevens president of Springfield, Illinois chapter of the Million Mom March was arrested for possession of an illegal gun that had its serial number ground off, and drugs. Copped a guilty plea on the drug charges in exchange for having the gun charge dropped and avoiding trial.

In case you missed it, HECTOR MARROQUIN, the founder of a gang intervention program called NO GUNS, was arrested last week for being in possession of a firearm. As a convicted felon, he isn't allowed to have a gun. And even if he was allowed to own a gun, as head of an organization that calls itself NO GUNS, it would have looked hypocritical anyway.

Hector Marroquin Sr., 49, of Downey was taken into custody when police raided his home looking for his son, Hector Marroquin Jr., a reputed gang member nicknamed "Little Weasel," Hawthorne police Lt. Tom Jester said.

Marroquin Jr., 31, was wanted as a suspect in a home-invasion robbery that terrorized a Hawthorne woman and her infant in December, Jester said.

and my all time favorite, Carl Rowen, the Washington Post columnist who said, "Anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail- period!" Who threw a hissy fit claiming discrimination when he was arrested for shooting a kid skinny dipping in his Washington DC swimming pool with an illegally possessed and unregistered handgun. How does he claim a naked kid reached for a hidden weapon with a straight face?

Shootings by gun control advocates versus fraud by a CCW instructor.

14. The range is gonna try to skate on the state "fees" aren't they ?
" He was just leasing space ... like at the flee market . That fucking fleebagger . "

Do I recall a tale the good Mr Turner was relating to me about a similar embroglio with a KY-NRA instructor , and the NRA got everybody retested for free , and gave em all a pen or somethin' ?

21. I don't know
It would make a difference if the range was handling the money or contracting the instructor. If he was renting range time and not using it to cut down on "overhead" the range got short-changed as well as his customers.

The KSP has said they will waive the application fees for those who reapply after getting proper training.

It is a bum deal for the people the asshole ripped off by shortchanging them on the training.

12. CHL is gun control and this is an example of how people can get lazy or
Fraudulent. Jpax would support this kind of thing if it could get him a few propaganda articles to post here if the people who gained the CHL without fulfilling the training requirement did something stupid

15. Wow you found 1 bad apple out of thousands of competent instructors
Like many I know in PA, WV and OH who would never cheat like this. The instructors I know value their own reputation, their right to carry a firearm, their ability to teach safe and lawful gun handling to students and to ensure their students will survive any self-defense encounter where the student has to use a firearm.

17. Wow, you have to have training to get a CCW permit in Kentucky?
Not here in Alabama. Well, it turns out some counties require training. Mine doesn't.

18. Tell me about it; I live in Washington
Washington, my home (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_My_Home). The original "shall issue" state, back in 1961, and the day I got naturalized as a U.S. citizen at the Seattle DHS building, I stopped at the local police department on the way home and submitted the forms and payment for a Washington state CPL. Oh yeah, and had my fingerprints taken, which was actually more difficult than having them taken by the DHS.

Ultimately, I had my CPL before I even bought a firearm. Frankly, I got the CPL so I wouldn't have to deal with the state-imposed 5-day waiting period to buy a handgun.

But do we have a problem with all those untrained CPL holders in Washington state shooting up the landscape? Oddly, we don't. However, firearms instructors throughout the state have been doing a roaring business for years. Evidently, many CCW permit holders seek training even if it's not legally required. Who knew? It's not as if they had to undergo a background check and submit their fingerprints to the FBI or anything... oh, wait.
