Manhattan jury finds man who had loaded gun in his car not guilty

After a mere 30 minutes of deliberations, the foreman said ``not guilt,’’ as Jonathan Ryan‘s knees buckled and he broke down in tears, hugging defense lawyer Mark Bederow.

The 29-year-old had been indicted for criminal weapons possession and he admittedly motored into Manhattan on Feb. 21, 2010, with a 9mm pistol stored in his truck’s glove compartment.

1. Good call. The gun WASN'T loaded

A magazine with seven bullets...was separated and in another end of the glove box, but that counted as a loaded weapon under New York’s tough anti-gun laws...

Tough? That's stupid. While it was irresponsible of the defendant to forget that he had a weapon on board and would be taking it across state lines (that's part of responsible gun ownership, too), that's what he's guilty of, not of having a loaded firearm.

2. Good call for the jury. A proper application of jury nullification. Contrary to what
judges will tell you - a jury DOES have the right/ability to judge the law, not just the person.

he would be locked up on those stupid charges. Stupid laws tend to be applied unevenly (crack vs power)
