1. unFREAKINGbelievable!!!
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 06:26 PM by slackmaster
I almost got thrown in jail while trying to enter that courthouse with a handcuff key on my keyring, and a known schizophrenic who happens to be THE MOST INFAMOUS criminal defendant in the county slips out and onto the streets.

I'll lock the doors all right. And load my Mossberg with 00 buck.

ON EDIT: I suggest changing the title to "accused murder" or "alleged murderer" in the interest of fairness to Mr. Tuite.

2. Lock your doors and keep your phone near to call 911....
cause we all know protecting yourself with a firearm isnt an option in your state. :-)

3. You have an understandable misunderstanding about California law
Using a firearm on your property or at your place of business in self-defense is perfectly Kosher here. If you use it inside of your home the burden of proof is on the state to show that a shooting was not justified, i.e. the law presumes that you were justified in shooting an uninvited visitor if you felt that you were in danger of injury or death.

6. It's a good thing Tuite is dumber than the cops
If he had a lick of sense he would have hopped onto a trolley or hitched a ride South to the Mexican border.

INSIDE STORY:

A coworker's brother was on jury duty downtown today. There was a large pool of prospective jurors for Tuite's trial. The whole courthouse was locked down for three hours while they searched for Tuite. They had to excuse everyone from the jury pool because knowledge that Tuite had escaped would have tainted them as jurors.

7. UPDATE - Richard Tuite has a long track record of escapes

A sidebar in the printed edition documents about a dozen incidents of Tuite escaping from custody, and his criminal record.

8. I have to relay this similar story
Dateline: McLean County, Kentucky. November, 1992

In Livermore this afternoon, prisoner A escaped from deputy B while he was being transported to the Ohio County Jail (McLean is a small county with no jail). When last seen, prisoner A was wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, shackles and waist cuffs.

Deputy B stated that prisoner A jumped from his cruiser while it was stopped for a stop sign at State Route 136 and US 431. Prisoner A (wearing shackles) outran deputy B and made good his escape. When asked why he didn't shoot prisoner A, deputy B replied, "My gun wasn't loaded."

Prisoner A was recaptured in Muhlenberg County later that day while riding a mule in an attempt to put distance between himself and authorities. (Prisoner A was still in the orange jump suit an full convict jewelry.)

Maybe Sheriff Andy will let him have a bullet or two now.

10. He's still a deputy and the whole county calls him Barney
to this day. All 12,000 of 'em.

His face still stays red most of the time.
