South Dakota Republicans propose bill that requires all adults to own a gun

Requiring health insurance is obviously socialism but requiring everyone to own a gun is freedom loving democracy. Is that how it works?

The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.

Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”

The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”

12. Requiring it on the state level...
Requiring it on the state level may in fact be constitutional.

I haven't read the SD state constitution, so I can not say for sure.

The federal mandate on the other hand, wont pass muster.

The federal government was granted power by the constitution to regulate commerce between the states.

The federal government was NOT granted power to COMPEL or REQUIRE commerce between the states where none previously existed.

I can not believe anyone would like government to have that power, and I think anyone that really does believe it should have that power, hasn't given much thought to how a future administration might use it.
