"No state background check for gun buyers, Minnesota House panel decides"
http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_17205092?nclick_check=1

"A Minnesota House panel voted today to repeal a state background check for gun purchases, opting to rely instead on a federal system. "

Seems redundant to me to have two systems anyway.

1. It makes more sense to use a federal system
Because it would be more likely to have data from other states.

3. So you want to make it easier for assassins to buy guns?
Honorable, law-abiding gun owners have NO reason to object to background checks.

7. Here's a cold pack for that knee.
You might want to see a neurologist if it keeps jerking like that.

And you might actually want to read the article next time.

8. The NRA is against federal background checks as well.
They won't stop until there are no background checks at all. And THEN we're doomed to have every city turn into a latter day Fallujah. That's ALL uncontrolled gun ownership can possibly lead us to. It can't possibly have any progressive or humane effects. Guns are never good for the workers or the poor in this country.

23. When your pal Bush and Cheney set up a "democracy" like Iraq
they fail to place within their constitution a 2nd amendment. In fact militias are illegal in the Iraqi constitution. That 2A would be very inconvenient over in Iraq if a future Bush wanted to modify that country by force.

9. So you think MN's local background check was superior to the FBI's?
Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 04:15 PM by benEzra
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics

The primary background check requirement is Federal. So is the primary background check system.

10. With two background checks there's a greater chance of finding something
And remember, the NRA won't stop until they've repealed the federal background check as well.

12. Ummm, the FBI's database incorporates the databases from all states...
and the NICS system was created by a bill the NRA helped write, as I recall. They're definitely on record as supporting it, as do I.

14. You need to become better informed on the subject, Ken. Presently MN does not use NICS at all.
The state is one of several that have opted out to use their own system INSTEAD OF the federal one.

17. Do I detect some disinformation here? It seems the NRA disagrees with you...
...and you both can't be correct:

http://www.nraila.org/Issues/Faq/?s=38

"What is NRA’s position on instant background checks (NICS)?

NRA’s position is that NICS is in need of improvement...."

Evidence, please.

19. If Minnesota spent that money getting their mental health records into the NICS database
Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 07:37 PM by benEzra
instead of merely double-checking a very small subset of the records that the FBI checks, it would actually do some good.

11. You are totally off topic but just for the Hell of it
There's really no reason to do a background check on honorable, law-abiding gun owners now is there?

16. There are still going to be background checks.
Honorable, law-abiding gun owners have NO reason to object to background checks.

Aside from the fact that this is exactly the same as saying, "If you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide", which has been used to justify all kinds of erosions of liberty under Bush's Patriot Act, the article is not talking about doing away with the requirement for background checks. They are eliminating the state background check since they are already using the federal NICS system.

What's next, them helping doing away with the Federal system?

I'd hope I don't need the :sarcasm: thingy

5. The federal system works fine ...
no need to waste money. Take the money saved and use it to input the names of people who should not be allowed to purchase firearms to the federal system in a timely fashion.

having a state system on top of the federal system is meant to just make it more of a bother to buy a gun.
