Martin Luther King applies for a gun permit in Chicago
MLK was flatly denied a permit by the State of Alabama after his house was bombed. If he were here today and applied, do you think Mayor Daley of Chicago would issue him a gun permit?

14. I think I can come up with a reason
Namely, given how various anti-gun types like Bloomberg, Schumer et al. have invoked the memory of MLK in order to advance their own agenda (see this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x362793), it's no less appropriate (or no more inappropriate, depending on your point of view) to ask what King's stance on private gun ownership was while he was alive, rather than making unfalsifiable--and thus unverifiable--claims as to what King's opinion would be were he alive today.

21. the purpose of this post
was to pretend that MLK sympathised with gun "rights" advocates who play on racist white suburban fear to push their agenda on the rest of us.

"As we have seen, the first public expression of disenchantment with nonviolence arose around the question of "self-defense." In a sense this is a false issue, for the right to defend one's home and one's person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law." Taking a quote out of one context and then applying it to another isn't all that difficult to do. Do you really think that Dr. King would agree with you fellas, especially considering that you appeal to racist suburban white fear? Considering that you think the answer to violence is more violence? That truly is laughable.

It's a little despicable to dig up Dr. King's corpse so you can place words in his mouth.

"Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love."

24. "political and moral questions of our time".. not about a person's own choice..
Here's another quote, illustrating the difference between the two..

"Finally, I contended that the debate over the question of self-defense was unnecessary since few people suggested that Negroes should not defend themselves as individuals when attacked. The question was not whether one should use his gun when his home was attacked, but whether it was tactically wise to use a gun while participating in an organized demonstration." Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Chapter II, Black Power, Page 27, Harper & Row Publishers Inc., First Edition, 1967.

25. I asked you a question
given the gun violence that plagues our communities, and the racist fearmongering of the gun crowd...do you really think MLK would be on your side of this issue?

26. The good doctor has spoken,..
So of course, we must reject data which departs from a simplified- but false- hagiography of the man. Heck- ditch the Scripture prophecy of 'meek Jesus' returning in glory wielding a sword- meh! doesn't fit a wimpy carricature.

Better to take the man at his word, no? He sure spoke his convictions.

Deacons for Defense and Justice stood ready, armed with more than moral force. The Civil Rights movement was not a passive and pacifistic punching bag- men among them stood ready, with firearms, to defend themselves and their families from violence. It is true- and exceedingly brave- that people strove to have their rights respected by marching, singing, demonstrating peacefully and unarmed, but that's not the whole of the story. The broad-picture, nonviolent paradigm did not rule out defense of one's person or family by force, when necessary, as in resisting a home intruder.

31. MLK was talking to people
Whose houses and churches were being firebombed and whose sons were being lynched by armed mobs. That''s not the situation with the white suburban gun owner. The greatest threats to him and bouncing around in his own head.

32. hold the phone-
If the Bill of Rights are good for Black families and church communities, they're good for ALL OF US.

And I for one want the same rights as my black brothers and sisters, and my rights must match theirs. Otherwise, we have a nightmare, not The Dream.

I challenge you to stop stereotyping 'white suburban gun owners', whatever that's supposed to mean.

It's wrong to make blanket, negative judgements about people.

We all get to exercise all of our rights all the time; otherwise the situation is unjust, elitist, and laden with prejudice.

Even today he would have his right of self defense infringed in some states.

The good news that is that 40 States (up from 9 in 1986) believe in Equal Protection Under The Law only 10 states are allowed to willfully discriminate as it relates to protected rights.

13. Yes. If MLK was here today he would be allowed to have a gun pemit in Chicago ...
The question is not if the rich or famous can qualify for firearm permits; the question is, can the average citizen get one without having to pay an exorbitant fee or spend hours and hours jumping over hurdles designed to discourage him?

Chicago may well end up like NYC. If you are a celebrity, an athlete, are rich or well connected, then you can get a permit to own and even carry a firearm. That's because YOU are better than the average citizen of the Big Apple.

The bottom line is "we can't allow THOSE people to own firearms." If you are not one of THOSE people you can.

Gun control has always had and will continue to have racist roots.

Movement Under Way To Arm NYC Bodega Workers
Hispanics Across America Handing Out Gun Permits Across City

October 28, 2010 5:12 PM

NEW YORK (CBS 2/1010 WINS) – After yet another murder last week of a bodega owner by an armed robber, there’s a push to put guns in the hands of these small business owners so they can defend themselves.

***snip***

Fernando Mateo of Hispanics Across America said Thursday when it comes to safety, bodega owners are at a distinct disadvantage.

“We want to make sure that, these criminals, when they enter one of these bodegas, to try to rob these sitting ducks, as we may say, know that their lives may end as well,” Mateo said.

***snip***

Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently lowered the cost of a gun license from $340 to between $25 and $110, but proposed revisions will make getting a permit even harder.

“We do an awful lot of research before we give a carry permit or a permit to have a gun in your home. In New York City we take it very seriously,” Bloomberg said.

Nevertheless, Mateo and his group are determined to give all bodega owners the option, and they’re passing out gun permit applications to every store owner.

The group also wants a law requiring surveillance cameras in every bodega, but, they said, that’s not enough.

“We need protection. We need something in the hand we can defend,” bodega association president Ramon Murphy said.

The chances of the majority of those bodega owners who apply to get a gun permit in NYC is as likely as my winning the lotto tomorrow.
