Demand that Congress ban "Mass Murder Weapons."
Edited on Mon Jan-10-11 09:42 PM by ClassWarrior
Automatic weapons, semiautomatic weapons and extended magazines have no other purpose than the mass slaughter of human beings, and thus have no place in civil life.

Call them "Mass Murder Weapons." Then ban them.

NGU.

1. Automatic weapons are heavily restricted under the 1934 National Firearms Act.
You can't go out and buy one. Not easily. Purchasing an automatic weapon requires passing extensive background checks and paying a transfer fee of thousands of dollars; only automatic weapons manufactured before 1986 qualify for such transfer, and all transfers must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Legal, transferrable automatic weapons are also not cheap; the average for a transferrable M-16 is $18,000.

Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns have legitimate sporting uses for hunting and target shooting.

The only weapons you can argue have no purpose other than killing people are handguns (which are pretty much designed for that purpose).

6. Then add handguns to the list. Is "legitimate sporting uses" what the kids call it these days?
And automatic weapons aren't heavily restricted enough. Ban 'em!

10. Can you name the last instance of a mass murderer in the United States...
who used an automatic weapon? Not semi-automatic. (I've looked and can't find a single instance of such a thing happening at all. Not since the 1930's anyway.)

they are used in shooting competitions and for hunting.

41. Alternatively
You can simply hand the rethugs the keys to the Whitehouse as well as both chambers of the house for the next 20 years or so.

Didn't the last time they tried an AWB teach you anything?

I want to deregulate automatics so that they are as easy and inexpensive to accquire as semiautomatics. That's what I'm working toward.

2. Decisions by the right wing activist Supreme Court probably make this impossible...
at this time.

More than that, so many Democrats and Republicans are members of, or under the influence of the NRA, that such a ban would never even make it to committee.

Oh you mean spectacular, headline grabbing mass slaughter, rather than the mass slaughter of vastly larger magnitude that occurs on the roads every day, my bad.

4. Automatic weapons are not readily available to the
public. In principle I could agree with banning extended magazines. The problem is you limit them to 10 rounds someone shoots 10 people then they want to make them 6 rounds and so on until all guns are banned.

7. reinstating the assault weapons ban that Shrub let expire would be a start IMO
Not a great start but it would be better than where we are now.

Why Bush tax cuts can be extended but an assault weapons ban can't be is beyond my comprehension

21. Maybe because the AWB was a feel good, do nothing, worthless piece of shit that even Clinton
admits costs the Democrats control of congress for a decade, and still causes them to lose votes with gun owners.

Maybe that "small" fact.

50. Not quite..
The ban limited sales of 30 round magazines produced after the ban went into effect.

You could still legally buy and possess those created before the ban.

42. If it was a good idea you should be able to show how ...
Good luck.

Before the ban "assault weapons" were curios.

During the ban these "black rifles" became extremely popular.

Before the ban no shooter that I knew had any use for an extended magazine.

During the ban all the shooters I knew had to have several extended mags for the new "assault weapon" they had just bought.

The AWB had absolutely no effect on the availability of "assault weapons" or high capacity magazines. ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!

9. Congrats. You just banned most guns made in the last 50 years, and killed the Democratic Party.
And as proven by England's gun ban, the murder rate will stay the same, with slightly different tools.

Meanwhile, nobody outside a hardcore urban blue district will vote for a Democrat again for at least twenty years.

14. You are in an extreme and shrinking minority.
If Democratic party was stupid enough to try to do what you want them to do.
1) It would be ruled Unconstitutional
2) Likely wouldn't have the votes to pass
3) Would result in Republican control of all 3 branches for next 10 years.

16. You've made a false assumption...
Edited on Mon Jan-10-11 10:23 PM by Brilliantrocket
You assume that life is always civil. It isn't. A criminal that breaks into your home will no understand words. You imagine a utopia. This is delusional and will never exist. I hate when people always try to say that humans are somehow radically different than animals. We aren't , we are greedy by nature because the selfish creature survives. As such remedies like the one you suggest will never work in the real world. As long as there is free will, crime will be committed. This means that those who live within the law need a tool to protect themselves against those who don't.

A reaction like yours is knee-jerk. This disappointments me, as I view most liberals as able to think in the long term, unlike many freepers.

in unamerican, anti-constitutionalist behavior like trying to strip us of one of our guaranteed rights as provided by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Gun grabbers are dangerous to America and our freedoms.

What right are YOU willing to give up in exchange for me giving up MY right guaranteed by the Second Amendment?

24. You mean like airliners?
The largest mass murder I can think of was carried out by flying airplanes into buildings full of people. We had a big one in Oklahoma City in 1995 using fertilizer and diesel fuel. Ban one type of weapon and people will fashion another one out of something before the sun goes down.

How many legally purchased machineguns have been used in a crime in the last 70 years?

2. One was by a Police officer.

So machineguns are almost never used in crime and are almost impossible to get.

32. Derp derp derp.
Hyperbole is best practiced when it is only a stone's throw from reality. Honey, this ain't even close.

Automatic weapons are rarer than hen's teeth, and have been used in a handful of crimes since 1934, none of them 'mass murder'

Semi-automatic weapons are over 100 years old. Good luck banning those.

'Extended magazines'? Really? When a magazine change takes about a second? That's sure to do.. umm.. nothing.
