LA Gun Owners Warned Again Not to Fire in the Air for New Year's Eve ...

DEPUTIZED: Don't shoot guns in air on New Year's Eve
Posted: 12/27/2010 04:05:22 PM PST

Los Angeles. Los Angeles police and county sheriff's deputies warned the public Monday to resist ringing in the New Year with celebratory gunfire, which can have dangerous consequences.

Shooting into the air can be deadly, and officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said those caught face possible felony charges.

"ATF wants you to know that you can enjoy the festivities without placing the public in danger," said John A. Torres, special agent in charge of the ATF bureau in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has come a long way since the 1990s. In 1998, two people were killed by falling bullets on New Year's Day and, on July 4, 1999, a 9-year-old boy lost his life the same way.

1. That seems to be a popular thing to do among people from South America,
happens pretty regularly around here. You mean them bullets don't go off into space?

4. I lived in a neighborhood in Tampa ...
with plenty of immigrants from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and central and south America. New Year celebrations included a lot of gun fire.

I moved to a small town in north Florida and I usually sit outside on my porch (under a roof) as the New Year comes in and listen to people celebrating with their revolvers and semi-auto weapons. If anything there is more gun fire here than there was in Tampa.

The local police are instructed to stay out of certain areas of the town during that time unless dispatched. Guns, alcohol and New Year parties are a bad mix.

13.  I lived in Town 'n Country for 20 years, a bit west of the Cuban neighborhoods
don't recall a lot of gunfire besides what we did ourselves! :D

15. Sounds like the upscale area of Town 'n Country ...
I liked my neighborhood and lived there 32 years. All the people were nice but there were very few people who spoke English as their native language when I left. Unfortunately I didn't speak Spanish. My next door neighbors on one side were from Colombia and the other from Cuba. The neighborhood had people from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and El Salvador. I would have loved to have been able to learn of the life experiences of these people.

I now regret that I didn't take the time to learn Spanish while I was living there. When I talked to my Cuban neighbors I often had one of their grandchildren act as a translator. I could communicate with the guy from Columbia in English but it was challenging. I drove him to work at Bush Gardens for a few weeks while his car was being repaired. His stories of life in Colombia were fascinating and somewhat scary. He was glad to be living in the United States.

7. I'm just basing this on our former neighbors who seemed to enjoy
shooting off of their back porch on specific holidays...They are gone now.

17. Some people from Southeast Asian countries indulge in that as well
I've seen bursts of automatic fire with tracer ammunition coming from the Linda Vista neighborhood of San Diego on several occasions, usually Chinese new year.

18. Ditto with certain people in the Balkans
During Operation "Allied Force" in 1999, when the Serbians managed to down a F-117A Nighthawk, I remarked that the place had probably just inadvertently flown low over a wedding.

And of course, we've seen a number of incidents in Afghanistan in which AC-130s engaged ground targets, only to have it claimed afterward (sometimes in a manner that strained credulity) that the ground fire was members of a wedding party firing into the air.

2. That's how Louis Armstrong started his music career...
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Tm6rbwLR7Es/S2ZpukRdbSI/AAAAAAAASho/Y1pyZlE9-jc/s400/waif+hime+brass+band.jpg

That's him in the middle of the last row.

He celebrated New Year 1913 by firing a gun in the air, was arrested by police, and sent to the home, where he learned to play the cornet. The rest is history...

8. and so the slippery slope to take away my gun begins.
I have 2nd Amendment rights to shoot in the air if I want to; after all, I'm not aiming at anyone, and if anyone gets hit, it was an accident, anyways.

24. Actually, most of the "fired bullets" referenced are not legal...
A better practice, if you don't have fireworks (we couldn't legally get them when I was a kid), is to fire a shotgun up into the air (still illegal). The shot, having lousy sectional density, falls back onto the ground and people like coarse sand, doing no harm.

10. If you are in any way serious, I sincerely hope that you don't and never will own a firearm ...
in fact with that attitude, even if you are joking, I hope you never have or will even consider owning one.

And I really hope nobody gives you a gun to play with.

By the way, your post in answer to illeagal immigration should not have been removed. I may not agree with you entirely, but your response was, as usual, logical, on point and factual.
