HARTFORD — — A man taking out his garbage Monday morning on Melrose Street was attacked by his neighbor's pit bull terrier, police said. The man then pulled out a handgun and shot the dog dead.

Police responded to the call about 6:45 a.m., after the shooting.

Sgt. Christene Mertes said the person attacked by the dog had a valid pistol permit and a properly licensed handgun, and he was not charged.

Police located the dog owner, who told them he'd let the dog out of the house to relieve itself when it took off across the street.

The victim reported minor wounds from the dog.

Of course, we all know that the true "victim" here is the dog's owner, who should now sue on the grounds of loss of companionship.

6. There's nothing wrong with pit bulls that can't be solved by
shooting their owners.

2. Now if it were a Boston Terrier, that would be excessive

I find the "we all know" snippet mildly amusing. It reflects an insulated, willfully ignorant mind. Do you really think all of us "know" that to be true or are is the "we" a more select group of people that think exactly as you do?

4. Just trying to infuse a little bit of sarcasm into the discussion...
Sometimes I go overboard with it.
Of course, (as we all know), sarcasm gets lost on some people, and on others it's seen as more of an insult.

7. The gun of course!
The presence of the gun emboldened the dog.

8. Oh noes!
You mean guns can send their evil "do bad things" thought-rays to animals as well?

Alert the media!

9. Oh shit
I better put my guns in a lead lined safe otherwise they will cause my coyote, dogs, cats, birds, and fish to run rampant and attack everyone and everything.

10. You have a coyote?
My husbands grandfather had a pet coyote and wrote in his book about her. She was a fantastic cattle dog it seems.

12. Yeah
I rescued an orphaned 2-4 week old desert coyote pup and my wife nursed it back to health, we were going to release it back to the wild but it has imprinted on my wife and we don't believe it would survive in the wild, also it has made best friends with our himalayan cat, they eat, sleep, and play together, they are inseperable. She is such a wonderful and loving animal

14. The article doesn't say whether or not the dog's owner had a fenced yard...
Sure as hell should've.
